I haven't hiked the entire trail but the parts I've been on were nice. Bring a water filter there are creeks everywhere.

Also check out the Backbone and Caroline Dormon trails just north of there but still in Kisatchie.

I don't think they are big enough for fish. Just little clear sandy bottom creeks. I could step across them. The trail does come close to Lake Kincaid. Within a mile maybe.

If you want to fish the Black Creek Trail by Wiggins Miss follows Black Creek River for most of the trail. I've never fished it but there should be some in there. I've canoed it a few times.

I followed the instructions found in this book. LINK I hiked it from Woodworth to Valentine Lake which I think is backwards but worked out fine for me. You don't need to pack in a ton of water because there are many creeks along the way to refill. I used a Sawyer Squeeze for my filter and was pleased. The two designated camping areas are not well marked and can be missed if your not looking for them. Earplugs came in handy because there was a ton of critter activity at both campsites.

Here is a thread with a lot more information. LINK

Best hiking in Louisiana. I spent my childhood mountain biking and hiking that trail with my dad and siblings. Know it like the back of my hand.

Starting in woodworth is ideal. Valentine creek and lake are the prettiest parts to me and good for swimming. Great time for camping right now. Watch out for coons gettin ur food and bring a good ole dog with you. Look for the bald eagle living on kincaid.

If you like camping, check out camp beauregard and red dirt up next to cloutierville

The Backbone Trail in Red Dirt has got to be my favorite Louisiana trail I've done so far. Great views and a really awesome campsite at the top of a large bluff. I made a thread a few years ago detailing my first hike there. LINK

I hiked the whole length in 2006, started one morning, spend the night at the large campground, finished around lunch the next day.

I enjoyed it, but I wish I had waited until the Azalea's were in full bloom.

Don't speed, don't drive too slow. Have all your paperwork. Don't look suspicious to the local police. Better yet, just don't go.

Take exit 119 off of I-49, stay on LA 119 for a few miles then turn right onto Long Leaf Trail Scenic Byway. Stay on that road for a few miles and then on your left you will find a parking lot with restrooms. That's the trailhead for the Caroline Dorman Trail and The Backbone trailhead will be accross the street.

Here is a map. LINK

How tough was hitching a ride from one end to the other?

I want to hike the whole trail but never had another vehicle to shuttle me.

I went with a friend. We left a vehicle at each end.
