Why do rabbits stink so damn bad when cleaning?

Killed two rabbits this weekend and the smell from cleaning them was awful to say the least. Last time I killed a rabbit was probably 17 years ago. I'm guessing this is normal, but I'd like some reassurance.

Because rabbit guts just stink. I always gut them immediently when I kill one. It helps a whole lot, especially if you just hit the rabbit and not the head.
Eta: In my family it is required for you to got it where you kill it and put the guts in a tree so the dog don't get em.

i can't tell if it's a chain or a keeper for the hat. it's driving me crazy. if it's a gold chain, i will forever picture him as Gator in The Other Guys.

I have never known a rabbit to stink too bad, we gut them and hang in a tree ASAP. Used to hang the guts in the tree too, that way the dogs dont eat em.
