Understand that I'm not trolling or asking for them to be banned. I just want to know why someone would own a weapon such as an AR-15. I know gun shops sell AK-47s and I always thought how cool it would be to own one. Is it simply for gun enthusiasts/collectors? I'm not a gun enthusiast obviously so excuse any ignorance.

A pencil can be an "assault weapon" if you assault someone with it

For some people collecting guns and shooting them is a hobby.

I own many automatic weapons and they are no different in terms of firing ability than the rifles you mentioned. The term "assault weapon" is sentionalized by idiots and the media

Which is why I put the term in quotes...for lack of a better word.

Becouse here in America, one can. Guess you never shot one with all the fire power that they can put out. Till then, don't knock it till you try it.

Because they are fun to shoot and many options for using as home protection and for hunting. Lots of accessories available and it is our right to own one.

Not the typical, I own a gun for self defense from thugs, or to kill a squirrel, or even to hunt my own food should power grid etc go down...

but consider this... (and I think our founding fathers had this in mind, as well)...

As we let our politicians slowly take over our country, and find ourself subjects to their reign... one day, hopefully a long time from now... our great grandkids might need their own "assault weapons" to defend themselves from "our" government, and maybe revolt and take over...

As you recall, our founders had just experienced this, and were in the midst of ongoing battles.

Might be handy to for "civilians" to own one...

(that said, I don't own one, but I should)

I own a black rifle/assult weapon/gun

It is not Automatic.

It is semi automatic.

I own hunting rifles that are greatly more powerful that are also semi automatic.

I have what a non gun enthuiest would call a huge arsenal. But I hunt and collect.

None of my guns have ever been used to shoot or kill people.
