While I am a big fan of the sheriff and his big arse hickory stick, I suspect his family and the rum both got their names from the same place. Royal naval pronunciation of 'purser'. The 'pusser' was the guy in charge of stores on the boat, including the rum. They were half navy, half civilian and made their money off of markups to the sailors but they had things they were required to provide in order to hold that position. Rum was actually something they just dispensed. It was as important as the ropes and sails to getting a man of war to where it needed to go. And they drank a shitload of it daily when they weren't near the Mediterranean and drinking wine instead. Considering how much they drank it's almost hilarious that the thing that got them flogged more than anything was drunkenness.
