Anybody know how to get info on where a guy can hunt on the weekends but not be a full-fledged member of a club? Can you arrange a hunt on somebody's lease for a day? Rates? Public areas?

Check out www.rodnreel.com. There are a few guides that post there that are pay per hunt.

So long as you have a boat S. Louisiana is LOADED with public land for duck hunting. In fact I think one would be hard pressed to find more public land to duck hunt on than in S. Louisiana. However 90% of it you need a boat.

Big Branch Marsh WMA in Lacombe/Mandeville is an excellent area. Plenty of marsh ponds and only a 15 minute "park and walk" from Hwy 190.
Check this link to a Google Map. I make a few trips here every season and have decent success.
LINK
Follow Lemieux Blvd as far down as the paved road goes and park. From there you'll have to walk, but it's a straight shot to the ponds you see a little further south on the map. Switch to the "Satelite" version of the map and zoom in a little and you'll see a small pond north of the larger ponds and that's where we usually go.
You will need AT LEAST hip waders but I recommend chest waders. It's marsh and if it has rained a few days before you go out there the ground will be extremely soft and you will sink a bit as you're walking out. Even if it hasn't rained, the ground is pretty soft. We've never tried to venture out to the larger ponds so I'm not sure how the gound is to get to them, but I'd imagine it's just as soft, if not softer, the closer you get to the lake.
Good luck!

Thanks, my friend! I may go scout the area Sunday! Do you hide in the grass or bring blind material? How many dekes do you use?

Last year the grass around the edge of the small pond was tall enough and close enough to the water that we were able to just embed ourselves in it.
We usually throw out 10 - 12 decoys.

Never hunted there for teal season. Not sure. Sorry.

just talked to my bro in law who lives 5 minutes from there and hunts there more often than me. He said there's usually no teal in the Big Branch area.

Guys I don't think there is a way to say this without sounding like a jack arse but I'll say it anyway and hope for the best.
I have been on duck hunting "talk forums" for about 14 years. During that time I have helped many people find places to hunt. However I have learned the hard way that you want to be very careful giving out exact spots to hunt. This board has easily over 1,000 people viewing it at any one time. When you start giving out exact places to hunt you WILL have people there the next time you want to hunt it. I would make the suggestion that you give general places to hunt and if you do in fact want to share exactally where to go do so in an e-mail. Again I am sure I'll get labed as an idiot for this but about 10 years ago I turned two of the best places I have ever been on public ground into a free for all and before then I hadn't ever had a problem with people in my spot. I am as anxious to help someone as the next guy and still will, but am more careful with giving out particulars on "where".

This. I'll usually never tell exactly where I hunt but i'll also be glad to help you get on your way pointed in the right direction. No one told me exactly where to go; if you want to hunt, get out the maps, make some calls to the public (wma/NWR's) offices and start paddling.

...and be sure to go to a blueprint/map store and buy the actual quadrangle charts. Use those crappy PDF maps you find on the LWF website for general reference only. Google Earth is a great resource as well.
