I had to buy the lotion because the perfume was sold out. It worked the same.
I just did a few smears, and not a whole body cover and it kept them away.

Supposedly almost all bugs hate garlic. The black fly seems to be no exception.
You could try eating garlic daily to give yourself a natural bug repellent. Or maybe there's another way of getting the garlic scent...

Try Vanilla, real not imitation, pit in spray bottle and spray your exposed skin, it works

This. I just buy the Great Value brand pure vanilla extract. It is already in an alcohol base. Keep it in my boat bag. Just put a few drops in your palm, rub hands together, and wipe onto exposed skin.
All those fancy scents ( Amber Romance, Swamp Swatter, etc) are simply vanilla based.
Save your money.
