Today's "corporate" Academy is nothing like what I grew up with. I remember the original owner and his brother (Gochman brothers) who ran Academy as an Army Surplus and plubmbing supply/tool store. One brother ran a location in SW Houston, and the other in Austin or San Antonio or something.

Had great prices on surplus items. I could get M1 carbine mags for 75 cents and surplus ammo for a 50 cents a box (new ammo would be $4 a box).

Academy is just too "corporate" for my taste. Will only go there occasionally for guns & ammo.

Guys there are brilliant. They send every CCA member a $10 GC before Memorial Day sale. I think they were getting over 70 a pop from those using the GC. Not too shabby.

They really need to add Latitude 64 and Westside. Innova and Discraft are getting to be boring.

It's convenient and cheaper than Bass Pro, but if I go in there with a list of 10 things (fishing related) they're only going to have 5 of them. I'm not talking about hard to find, technique specific things but things like junebug Zoom Ol Monsters, 1/4 oz. tungsten weights, 5/0 gamagotsu hooks, etc... Went Friday afternoon and couldn't find any of these. Happens everytime i go there. Their waterfowl stuff is pretty poor, as is Bass Pro's.

I'll stop in a couple times a week just to look around and see if I need anything.

Rod selection can be hit or miss . . . but they will take broken rods back for replacement or store credit, no questions asked.

And their Magellan brand is solid.

Every time I go specifically for tackle box supplies (sinkers, hooks, a certain bait) they are always out of what I want. I always end up at superior

Ours is usually well stocked. Terminal tackle is never lacking.

I usually find ridiculously good prices on firearms there. Got a youth 870 last year for $80 cheaper than Walmart, and they are selling the M&P 22 pistol for $100 less than Bass Pro.

So now we can infer that you go to either BRCC or SLU.

Should have taken the price quote back to walmart and gotten $100 off.

I only ever get gift cards to places I don't want like fast food places.
