What lumber to use for patio build

I need 10”x10” columns along with joists, and beams for an outdoor patio in south Louisiana. I was thinking Red Cedar but a contractor told me the overall length of 21’ x 16’ is too long for Cedar which is “soft” in his words. I want it to be bug and rot resistant.
There isn’t a money tree in the backyard, so I am looking for a blend of aesthetics and value that will hold up. Thanks.

Why the need for 10x10 columns? That sounds like serious overkill for a patio the size you are planning.
Treated lumber is likely your cheapest option because cedar, cypress, redwood, etc. will all cost a premium, especially at the lengths it seems you're talking about.
My issue with treated lumber, especially stuff not dried is how much of it will twist and bow as it dries out.
Without seeing your building plan to see exactly what you are attempting, perhaps you need to rethink your building plan so smaller dimensional lumber can be utilized.

A few times I've had to use steel tube columns with a wood wrap to get the right look for architects when wood columns can't handle the load.

10x10’s were for aesthetics. 8x8’ would be minimum.
Going with wraps around steel is ok with me. Anywhere in NOLA area that specializes in the wraps?

Call Cypress Beams & Things in Baton Rouge. I just completed a 20 x 24 cypress patio using 10x10 post & beams 6x12x20-24

May be able to find some that are kdat.
Kiln dried after treatment.
Basically stick it in the oven and pulls most of the moisture out.

There's a lumber company near me that is known for dried treated lumber, but they stick dry it, and it takes a while for that to happen after treatment under the pressures they use to infuse the wood with the chemicals.
I remember buying some 6x6's, 2x10's and a lot of 2x4's for a project from the local lumber yard. I stacked it in my shop for a couple months to get it started drying out and for the first week I was mopping up puddles under it.

Go find a guy with a portable saw mill go cut some Cypress use it green you will be fine in South LA
