600 Nitro in my Holland and Holland double rifle. It has a bit of a kick but once those deer are hit they tend to stay down.

perfect shot placement and still have a deer run

On a doe that is called a miss. A .308 in the brain box and she aint going no where.

On a possible mount, perfect placement in the spine just above he shoulder will drop them in their tracks too but the safe shot is a vital shot. I have seen a double lunged buck go 150 yrds and a single lung/heart shot hog go 200.

My advice, track everyone of them even if you can see where they are lying formyour stand so you get better at tracking.

Damn that sounds like fun.

Spent much time firing off of helicopters...

Fired everything on H60... M2, GAU-19, GAU-2, MK-19...

Fired GAU-2 and M2(GAU-18) off H53.

Fired twin M2's off of T-6 Texan..

Fired 20mm off of F-15 eagle...

Fired 20mm off of F-16 Falcon...

Fired M198 155mm Howitzer...

Fired quad 30mm at banner towed from soviet anti-aircraft vehicle.

Fired 30mm gun pod of Navy Hovercraft LCAC...

List goes on.... Mostly st5atic firings but still impressive...

Fired over a million rounds of ammo in a 12 year period.....

but the most memorable time was actually flying Dillon Huey in AZ and his Little bird at night from desert to Scottsdale...

Awesome!

maybe w/ a .270 or 7mm but w/ a .308

you'll have blood and 100yds is the max he'll run

Thanks. I also have a standard handi rifle in .45-70 for primitive season. The recoil was so bad that I added 4 lbs of lead to the inside of the stock. I haven't shot it yet to see how much difference it made.

Kinda why i opted for the .444, plus little better ballistics. BTW, the pistol grip survivor stock really helps reduce recoil....put it on your 45-70

I have two that I use, although not much (I'd rather duck hunt) for longer shots I have a .257 weatherby. For woods I have a .308 Win.

The .257 Weatherby is a super fast and extremely flat shooting round. I dropped a deer last year at just shy of 300yds. He never moved. I use 115 grain ballistic tips.

The .308 is just a fine weapon and very capable of the 300yd shot as well but I just like the .257.

The .257 was reportedly Roy Weatherby's favorite round.

You can get a Weatherby Vanguard for under $500 and you will be hard pressed to find a more accurate rifle.

Tips:

1) float the rear circumference of the fore end piece with a rat tail file so that it clears the gun frame

2) bush out the fore end hanger lug with rubber washers so that the fore end "floats" alongside the barrel

3) take the scope rail off and file down material around the screw taps which protrudes above the barrel; then set scope rail with epoxy

4) hand mill the mating surfaces of the breech until you get uniform contact; working the action as you go will reveal the high spots

5) hand mill the lug and mating surface of the receiver and barrel likewise

6) make sure the joint/fitment between your receiver and stock is without movement
