Definitely have to earn your dinner. Thanks

Stick your pecker in the water. Just be ready to start singing in a higher voice.

Good thread.
I always caught the most turtles catfishing which sounds similar to what yall do.
I work with a guy who found a wild one and made it a pet. He feeds it a lot of cantelope (which prob wouldn't work well for bait). Says that's its favorite food. He doesn't keep the turtle caged. It's like a damn dog. Lays around yard all day and comes in for supper.

Had T11 this morning.

He's too small to keep though. I would love to keep them as pets (the smaller ones). I have plenty of space where I live too. I just hate to keep a wild animal captive. I usually relocate them to a place I feel is VERY safe and little access to by public.

Kudos to you for relocating them. Conservation is a necessity, IMO.
I'm headed back from Destin now, about two hours away from attacking my new spot.
Will post updates if anything pans out.

Got spanked again yesterday.
Damn, it's been a while since I've caught a snapper.
No worries, gonna regroup and attack again this afternoon after work.
Good thing gizzards are cheap, I'd be broke by now.

I guess my adventure will slow as soon as the bite does or football begins. Happen to know when they slow? Winterish?

Yeah, they're cold-blooded. July and August is supposedly the prime months.

I have no inclination to either kill or eat turtles, but I must say that this thread is like reading a reality show and has been very entertaining.

Have you ever tried it?
I cooked some yesterday and it may be my favorite thing to eat

It just doesn't sound appetizing to me for some reason, but maybe once I tried it, I would like it.

As I was cooking my last sauce piquant, 11 friends watched in dismay. After the first taste, all quickly changed their minds.
Turtle, prepared correctly, doesn't taste fishy.
It has the texture of venison and tastes like a combination of duck, beef, chicken, and venison.
It's a divine delicacy only to be found in upscale restaurants and Louisiana home kitchens.

Turtle prices:
Tonys Seafood (BTR):
Commanders Palace (NOLA):
Jubans (BTR:
Occasionally has turtle soup.
Ive never seen turtle sauce piquant on a menu. It's hard to come by and super expensive to make.
At $13.99/lb., it competes with choice cut steak prices.

At least you are open minded. I can damn near guarantee if you came to my house, or the house of any other bonafide/certified turtle cooker, and ate a turtle sauce piquant on the porch you would go home and crawl through ditches in your subdivision looking for one.
You may also become an alcoholic. Just one of the tolerable (in my opinion) side-effects I suppose.

Best way for me to catch a lot of turtles at a time is with a hoop net with meat, liver, cut bait, etc hanging in the middle of the net. Gotta be shallow enough for the top to be showing and be able to bait the net. We use to sell them for 2.75 lb for snappers and 1.50 for red ear, sliders whatever y'all call them. Cruel but we use to nail treble hooks to the side of logs on both sides up and down the log and when they would hit the water a couple would get snagged. Fun times
