as the title says, the question is, what is best way of cutting a motorguide salt water metal stainless steel shaft trolling motor shaft shorter?

long story short i bought a trolling motor with a long shaft and now i realize i need to trim 10-12" off the shaft. so should i hacksaw it or should i try to borrow a plumbing pipe cutter? the head sticks way out over the bow and keeps getting banged into things so it "needs" trimming just for protection from damage as well as being sized right for the boat.

i am not sure but im thinking that a stainless trolling motor shaft is hardened stainless steel so i want to get the right stuff to cut it with

I would probably disassemble it and then find someone with a chop saw. You will have to take the wiring out of the shaft before cutting and likely will have to do some drilling for screws on each end, etc.

I am guessing you bought this used otherwise it would be a simple return to the place you purchased it.

Honestly. I wouldn’t even attempt it. I would sell it and get the proper sized trolling motor for the boat. Just my opinion. I could be wrong but I think the process will be a pain in the arse and you are very likely to have future problems with it.

Good luck. Please report back and tell us if you you successfully shorten the shaft and the process you used.

I would go with a hacksaw. Just be sure to clamp it down good.

You may also be able to buy a new shaft at the right length. Might be worth contacting motor guide directly or going through a dealer and see if they have a shaft that's the right length you can just buy. If your existing shaft is in good shape, a dealer may give you some credit towards the swap if they do repairs.

I have read of guys using tubing cutters. It really ain't too difficult from what I understand. I know It will void the warranty on Minn Kotas unless an authorized service center does it. Not sure on Motorguides.

This is what I had did in the pass. You have to take the head off first. Then start cutting it little bit at a time and rotate it being careful not to cut the wires. Once done, you have to cut the wires to length and install new wire clips. Also clean up the inside of the shaft were you had cut it with a file.

Why not just raise the motor in the water?

no its about 10 years old and i had to replace the head 3 times already because it hangs off the side the boat too far. i try to be careful with it but sooner or later stuff happens and its just hanging out side the boat a good foot at least

when i bought it, all i can guess is, the 50" shaft was the short version since i bought it for a flatboat.

whatever the way it happened, im stuck with it now and spending $1,000 to buy another one vs cutting the shaft shorter, im cutting the shaft.

my plan is to slide a smaller pipe inside to protect the wires as i cut, then cut around the outside just enough to get through rather then cutting straight across it. if its hardened steel as i suspect im probably going to end up using around $30 worth of sawzall blades to do it.

just was hoping/fishing for any better ideas

its the 50" shaft sw82hb 24vt motorguide the white salt water version with corrosion anode on the shaft, but its the hand control bow mounted one not the foot control one

i was looking around at the new ones and those are all 50" or 60" shafts so maybe i do have what they call the short shaft.

even if i bought a new one it looks like i would need to cut the shaft down. the only ones with shafts shorter then 50" are all transom mount motors.

i guess i could buy one of those if it fits into my bow mount but then who would buy my motor without the mount for it?

just FYI you can buy the 60" shaft to swap yours out for just $85. obviously you will need to extend your wires but that is very easy to do.

if you have the sw82 then this should be what you need LINK

If you've got to cut it a pipe cutter is the way to go. Only method to cut it square.

You need to at least try a pipe cutter 1st. I’ve cut plenty of golf shafts (which are pretty ganged hard) with them.

You can get one at Lowe’s for like $10-20.

Dremmel cut off wheel should do the trick. Make sure to clean up the edges after.
