A little cheaper than the glock, you can probably get one with Night Sights for $600. There used to be some good prices on them before the panic for around $450.

And I will be making one soon about calibers and felt recoil. To put it to you straight, your girlfriend could handle 45 just fine. I taught my 4'10" cousin how to shoot with my 1911 last night. She did just fine with it and preferred it over the others.

And here are my videos about shotguns and carbines for home defense. I think the best home defense weapons for a female for home defense would be an AR15 carbine (16" or shorter) or a youth model 20 gauge shotgun. But that's up to you to decide.

Now all we need is a park full of feathered rats aka pigeons. I haven't seen one of those in person, but I know a co-worker that picked up one of these:
