Anyone have experience with deer hunting at Westervelt lodge in Aliceville Alabama? We’re heading up this weekend and we’re curious what to expect.

Never been, but it a first rate lodge from what I understand. (food, amenities).

Reading stuff from folks that have been.....if you are the big dog in the group, you will get on a deer.

Pretty good deer hunting overall, but not spectacular.

I would highly recommend working a trip to the "Plantation House" in Aliceville. It is an actual old plantation home moved into town. It is restaurant now. They used to have a fried rabbit buffet with rice and brown gravy. If they still have it, I would strongly suggest it.

I've been twice, both times the week after Christmas ('14 and '15). I was invited by a vendor and we stayed at the house on the grounds (4 BR?) instead of in the main house. It is definitely top notch accommodations and Steve (caretaker/manager?) takes care of you both with the hunting and the meals.

Both times I was there, for every hunt they take the stands in the area you're going to hunt and put them each on a piece of paper. The paper is laid face down on the table and you hunt the stand you select. They could have left a couple of stands open for "the big client in each group", but I didn't notice that.

It was just prior to / very beginning of the Rut, and I never really saw any deer worth the money. There was one 8pt taken total on both trips, but that was it. On one trip, there was a Dr who took a yearling on his last hunt. You could tell they were pissed, but he said "I'm getting something for my money".

I'm happy to try to answer any other questions you may have. I had a picture of the 8pt I mentioned. I'll try to find it.

ETA--there was an 8 and a 9 taken:

Thanks. We'd be pleased with either one of those deer! I'll report back after the trip.

A doc I work with goes often. He loves it. Says the lodge has huge comfortable beds, they drop you off and pick you up at the stand, and pick up and clean your deer and pack it in your ice chest for you. You literally have to eat, drink, sleep, and pull the trigger. He does say that he can’t stay more than 3 days bc the food is so rich he would run out of medicine and have a heart attack or a stroke....lol

None of that sounds terrible sans the stroke or heart attack.

That is an annual trip for me and my family. The place is beautiful, the people are great, and the hunting is amazing. I enjoy that trip more than any other each year. You will gain weight on the trip, especially if you are sensitive to fried food. Steve and Jay are two of the hands, and are hardcore Bama fans. Jeff is another and he is an Auburn fan, so they have a lot of fun with him. All really cool. When you get there, look at the trophy album book from last year (2016_2017) that they display. The cover picture is none other than yours truly hahaha.

I'm from Eutaw about 25 minutes away. My uncle helps put on an annual Piggly Wiggly dove hunt there. The lodge is nice and you will be treated great and eat well. I've never deer hunted there, but I've hunted the area my whole life. There are some really nice bucks around there

Sorry--didn't mean that I wouldn't be happy with either of those deer. Just meant that I didn't see anything in the 8 hunts I made that were close to them.

It was a good time and the food was excellent. All you can drink wine at dinner.

No problem. I didn't mean to imply that you were thumbing your nose at them.

My farm is a few miles away from it. Pretty good hunting and they will take care of you.

Plantation house is closed. There is another restaurant called Gates that is pretty good that is near where it was. Not much else in Aliceville. There is a subway and a jacks and thats it.

If you dont want to eat at the lodge or in Aliceville you can get to Columbus MS (about 35 miles away). I like eating at Old Hickory steak house or Rubens steak and catfish house.

Good luck. The rut is starting to wind down in my area, but with the cold but it has been windy lately and movement has not been too hot, so they will still be out looking for some love.
