I'll be getting river sand soon to fill a 12x150 servitude in my yard that is part of my property. Since we are getting closer to Spring, i was going to put down some weed and feed over the river sand to try choking out the inevitable weeds that come with the sand, while trying to get the grass to grow a little quicker.

However, I have no idea if this is even effective and I keep seeing varying opinions on using weed and feed at all. Does anyone have any experience with putting weed and feed over river sand or general information about my situation that would be helpful?

If you can afford it, spend the $$ for better quality fill material. Too many problems with river sand. Torpedo grass sucks bro.

Massive understatement. That shite is the bane of any man who takes pride in his lawn.

That said, if you are willing to roll the dice with torpedograss, weed and feed is the wrong avenue to take. If you're worried about weeds, use a quality herbicide by itself, then you can fertilize in a month or two.

Not to mention the various fungi that come with river sand/silt. I had my final grade done with river silt and my grass was beautiful, until brown patch popped up everywhere before I grasped what was happening.

the best and cheapest thing for river sand is cover it with rye grass seed

it grows fast and quickly makes a root base in just a few weeks and then your grass will choke it out and replace it completely by mid summer. at that time any remaining rye grass dies out from the heat.

i had tried many things over the years but rye grass seed works better then anything else short of sod

I would never put river sand in my yard period. Not just because of the insane amount of weed seeds but its just gonna move around not provide a good fill in the end. It would actually be one of the last things i'd ever consider.

i would consider it if i has to level or raise a few acres. but i would also scope out how much it would cost using better material vs the herbicides i would have to use.

It looks like my options are limited to river sand, regular sand, and dirt (with clay of course). So i went with river sand. I also already have a decent bit of torpedo grass so while this sounds callous, i've accepted my fate.

For better or worse, thats what i think i'm going with. My yard is by no means in bad shape but it's no award winning lawn either so i'm ok with the sacrifice because my expectations aren't high. I just want decent grass that isn't browing with as little weeds as possible.

thanks, i'll give this a shot. Again, i'm not looking for a spectacular yard. Just to limit the weeds before they get too bad and to have my St. Aug grass grow through over the summer.
