Wanting to become an avid fishermen

Okay so I am 18 and have lived in BR for my whole life.. I have been fishing for specs occasionally and have really liked it a lot but unfortunately for me my father was never a big fisherman at all so he would never take me... I am going going to college now and want to pick up salt water fishing as a hobby. My dream is to one day have my own boat and camp somewhere like Fourchon or Cocodrie but for now I'm thinking about buying my own kayak and rod and reel and just sticking to the marshes.
I come to the Outdoor board for tips, tricks of the trade and any for of advice. TIA

Go fishing alot
Salt water fishing is a hard hobby for a college kid. The shite is expensive. It can be affordable with a yak, but still isn't cheap. Money is really the main issue for a college guy.

I'll call you next time I go. You can come and follow me around and write down everything I do. Then do the exact opposite. You'll be awesome!

the thing you need to remember is they call it fishing not catching, theres gonna be frustrating days and then days where you think your a pro. Louisiana sportsman magazine always has helpful tips and techniques.

Where are some places that I can safely go Kayak fishing without alot of large boat traffic?

I suggest you start off freshwater fishing. It's cheaper and usually safer.

Start off bank fishing.

You could put in your yak by Bobby Lynn's south marina off of La. 1 just south of Leeville. Plenty of canals and ponds pretty close to the landing and loaded with reds this time of year. Also the main
Bobby Lynn's marina has canoes and yaks for rent.
before you buy a yak you may want to rent one and try it out.

Idk about that, but an ice chest, a bucket and a rod will go a long way. He can get a feel for it, learn rigs, tides and tactics etc.

Surf rods are pricey and it will be hard to fish with when you don't need such a heavy rod. In the fall when the river is down you will have plenty of options. Keep it cheap and simple with one medium weight spin casting rod.

Best way is to go with friends or make friends who fish
My old man was too busy busting his hump to go fishing with me until I was like 23-24 so it was and error alone, friends and reading anything about it.......still not worth a crap as a fisherman but I "know" a lot about it
Get some live shrimp a medium weight spinning setup as mentioned and go out waist deep in the surf anywhere on the coast and something will eat it

Snooping the marshes in a kayak would be great. That's exactly what I used to do but with a canoe and a pirogue. Now I have a skiff and enjoy working the shallows in Florida for BIG specks. You never know where you will finally get a job. Fourchon could turn out to be Mosquito Lagoon or Laguna Madre.
