Visited a buddy in Oregon last week - this mule deer hangs out in front of his house.

Bend, Oregon. There’s a roundabout directly behind the buck. They’re rutting I believe. Pilot Butte is about a half mile away, my best guess is he hangs out on that hill mostly.

He showed up and chilled out the first day I got there… yes I felt like it was a direct sign from God or the Old West Spirit that I should move there.

There’s a small buck in the cemetery the dog spotted, if you can spot it…

The pic above is Smith Rock State Park… highly recommend a visit.

My aunt and uncle have a second home in Angel Fire, NM. It’s the same there. We vacationed there 2 summers ago and elk and deer just roam about not paying humans any mind.

Not all of it is woke. Half the state wants to consolidate with Idaho.

I almost hit a mule deer about that size during the rut right near that area in Bend.

He was chasing pussy during the rut.

You have to be careful riding a bike at night around there. A buddy and I were brewery hopping and he almost got rammed into by a buck running.

This guy was unfazed. Loved seeing him up close. Hand fed mule deer at the Royal Gorge when I was a kid, but this one was wild and it was cool to see.

I also saw a buck at Smith Rock as soon as I started my hike.

Wallowa lake in Oregon has elk and mule deer roaming through the state campground. I’ve hand fed them as a kid. All wild animals.

True. The big cities drag the good people down.

The government has gone hard anti-2A.

The guys my buddy lives next to in Bend were all baws, hunters, working men, etc.

I did see some live music at Volcanic Theatre, and even the crowd there wasn’t too woke. Certainly nothing compared to what I’m used to seeing in Nola.

Portland I visited 5 years ago the last time I was in Oregon, and yea…. So woke they need another word for it.

Same thing I thought, so I didn’t tackle him and slice his throat. He got lucky.

When I lived in New Mexico deer close to that would be all around the areas I would hunt duck, dove, quail and pheasant hunt. I could never get a tag. Could have shot a mule deer of a lifetime most days of the season by simply driving oil field roads, scoping and climbing any kind of rise and shooting the thing. They were thick and no one hunted them because it was almost impossible to get a tag.

Why is it so hard to get tags if they’re overpopulated?

New mexico is definitely not an opportunity hunting state.

I drove through New Mexico in February on my way to Montana, sorta took my time to take in the scenery… would LOVE to get on horseback and just take off on a hunt in that state. Some of it is just beautiful.

Anywhere in the state where mans interaction has been limited is gorgeous. If man has established a presence its hit or miss. I think it is the best state west of the Mississippi but I do not like people and winters are better in New Mexico than similarly sparsely populated states out west.

The lack of people was also what appealed to me.

I imagine it is a pretty thin margin managing the resources in the state, especially big game, due to the nature of 99% of the state. Water is VERY limited. there are areas of the state as big as some states where there is not enough water to sustain much of anything. Very fragile environment I imagine. I know that the dove and quail populations are measured directly by the amount of rain an area gets in a year. Where Pheasant are present they are thicker than any area that holds wild pheasant that I have ever seen and this is supported by the number of people who inundate the area for the 4 day pheasant season. The fact that there are any animals at all in most of the state is amazing...when I first hunted dove in New Mexico I was certain there would be very few. I was as wrong as I could be...but most of the state looks like it would be devoid of any life. I suspect it is a balancing act keeping huntable populations of big game in that environment.
