I didn't see anywhere that you had one, and were able to make that judgement
They are very tough, comfortable, reliable, and since price is factored in, probably a better choice

My brother drove nothing but Toyota trucks up until 03. I was a jeep guy until I got tired of having to turn a wrench on them all the time. We used to swap off all the time. I've driven upwards of 20k miles in an extended cab V6 first gen Taco.
Fuel mileage, ride comfort, modern options, cargo room, and driveability are all better in the 2nd generations. Off road the 1st generation is much better than a 05-07 2nd generation. Starting in 08 when Toyota added all of the traction control options and ATrac in the TRD off roads the second generation Tacomas got close to the first generations. I'd still choose a first gen for a toy strictly for the smaller size.
I'm not knocking a first gen at all, they are great trucks, but if the OP needs room to haul all of his hunting gear and is making long drives to and from work he would be happier in an 05 (if he can find one in his price range)

No way i would buy used get a standard for 23k vs buying one with 50k miles for 19k give me a new vehicle and a warranty vs 50k miles for a diff of 3500 dollars
