I currently have an 83 CJ7 and an 09 Unlimited Rubicon. Previously owned and built a 94 wrangler.
Rubicon is the daily driver. it's basically a grand cherokee with a soft top. However, mine has a 2.5" suspension lift with some knobby arse tires, heavy bumpers and a winch up front. The only reason I got it is because I need the rear seat to fit all 3 little Rajis and their car/booster seats. The lift, bumpers, winch,tires, and the way I drive it are the only things saving it from "Mall Crawler" status.
If you are looking for a second vehicle or toy, don't care about MPG, air conditioning, road and wind noise, actually staying dry when it rains (even with the top up), unzipping window at drive thru places, or random hot chicks begging you to go home with them, then the CJ7 is the way to go.
If those items listed above aren't your thing, and I'm not here to judge, get the 04-06 LJ. Bonus points if you can find a rubicon model.

Yeah, I love my '85 CJ-7, but I need to fix my differential leak.

Abandoning the build? Always wanted a built scrambler. No way I can justify having 3 jeeps though. Now when the 3 boys are old enough to drive........we might each have one

Just don't have time to work on it. Sad because there's a lot of money just sitting there. Maybe one day I'll get back on it.

I understand. My 94 began its life with a 4cyl and what looked to be donut spares for tires. 7+ years and who knows how much $ and time, cuss words, beer and busted knuckles later she was "completed" with all sorts of mods, complete drivetrain swap and a spring over lift.
That was all pre-wife and kiddos. Sometimes it sucks to put our fun and toys behind our responsibilities, but it's one way we can take measure of ourselves and decide to be a kid or a man.

Backstory is I had a Jeep when I turned 16. It was a 91 YJ, and I put a mild 2 inch lift on it with larger tires. Eventually got rid of it in college because it kept giving us issues. I grew up wanting a Jeep, and after I got rid of it, for years, I always wanted another one. We had our first child 6.5 years ago. And I was driving a grand cherokee, the family car, and my wife had an Accord. Couple of summers ago she trades in and gets a Highlander, 3rd row seats and all that. So I didn't need a family car. Found a nice TJ and bought it. Within 3 months she was pregnant again. Gave me all sorts of grief about it not being good with a carseat and all that. Wanted me to trade it in on a 4-door pickup or something like that. No way. I had waited 12 years to get another one, and there's no way I'm getting rid of it. We were talking a couple of months ago about things, and I told her I'd be ready to "get rid" of it when either my daughter turns 16 if she wants it, or when my son does. Then I'd buy myself another one!
I've always wanted a Scrambler too. They're just so hard to come by. Either they're already restored and built and command a big price or they are bare bones and need a lot of work just to get running again. I'd love to find a mostly stock one and build it how I like it.

frame and body of an LJ are 10" longer than a standard TJ
