I've had a lot of hunting beagles in my time. Don't listen to the people here that don't understand the difference in a pet and a working dog. You do what you have to do to alleviate suffering but there's a certain utility to be considered as well.

If the dog can't hunt. And he's biting you. And he's suffering. Well, he had a good run. It sucks because you get attached to them but you do what you have to do and don't let the dog suffer.

Generally a hunting beagle will never make a good pet because that's not something they understand. He understands one thing... chasing rabbits. And if he can't do that, he's miserable. And a miserable beagle makes everyone else miserable as well lemme tell you.

Healthy dogs are euthanized every day. It'll be okay. I think he made the right choice, for sure the one I would have.

I would have given the guy a chance and at least brought him to the vet, I walked away from this thread as it started and thought you were going to have him checked out, and in the matter of a few hours you shot the dog. What if he just had a slipped disc? or a pinched nerve? Weak outcome if you ask me. Poor choice by the OP and I dont give a shite what your excuse is, he worked hard for you. And to bring this to the Ob as some sort of grandstand why? then you shoot the dog and jump on posters that dont agree with you, then why bring it here in the first place.

To kill or not to kill, that is the question.

And to the OP wanting to borrow a dog

I am good with you making the decision when it comes to your dog but then in the same breath you asked to borrow someone elses dog?

I'm gonna refrain from calling people names for the time being. The dog was suffering and couldn't stand anymore, he wasn't eating. And who the frick says it was only a few hours? The dog came hunting Saturday morning and couldn't walk Sunday morning at 6am. We put him in the pen fine and dandy around lunch Saturday.

One thing is for sure, he isn't succeeding anymore.
Thanks for the positive comments, it wasn't an easy decision.

I am pretty sure they would be safe, unless they coughed.

I wouldn't or couldn't have shot the dog, but I don't think it makes the OP some kind of serial dog killer

I have a feeling that was more a joke cause I think beagles, deer dogs, etc. don't just "hunt" for anyone. There's a chance even the owner doesn't get them back each time you turn them loose.

I could be wrong though, maybe he was serious.

folks, it's his dog. you can't tell anyone else how to raise their kids, or animals.

lot of people that preach this animal BS have the social skills of an ape when dealing with other people. always trying to tell someone else how to do their own business.

i wish i had a buck$ for all the times i've heard women that had xx amount of animals and at the same time dissing children as pests.
