Sometimes you just got to do it. I put my old horse down not that long ago. Unfortunately the Mrs was home and made me pay $75 for the vet to come out.

You missed the part where it was a dog. His dog. He can do with it whatever the hell he wants including shooting it to prevent it's suffering. I wish I had done that to mine, woulda saved him pain, suffering, and a Goodyear smushng him.

Yea, you paid $75 for the animal, you hunted with him a handful of times, you had no idea what was wrong with him, you went to check him out, he bit you, and you killed him. Cliffnotes?

You forgot they he was going to wait a few days. Of course, he actually only waited a few hours but no difference.

It's people like you that shouldn't own dogs, your a piece of crap and your not hard b/c you don't give a shite about your animals. Don't own a animal if you don't care enough to bring it to the vet. Hope you feel great about yourself.

Very true. However you can't fault some people for thinking it is a little shitty to kill a good hunting dog within hours of the unknown problem appearing.

Just tell them the dog didn't have a collar on it, that'll make them feel ok about it.

And the bad thing is six months earlier I had a backhoe lined up to dig a hole and told myself it was time. He looked good that day so I put it off. Wish I wouldn't have. His last few days was suffering and I am upset with myself for letting that go on.

I think animals are supposed to live their life running and being an animal. If they can't continue in that manner it's time to end it quickly and painless.

Edit for being a terrible proof reader

You think ol'cookiller was worried about being "hard"

You people kill me.

Personally I would have gone ahead and checked further for ticks assuming I could get the mutt under control. If I could not and it continued to be combative then it would have died. It was clearly suffering. It was a work animal.

Coot, sorry to hear you had to put a good dog down. It has to be done sometimes.

I agree. It's nothing anyone wants to do. It just has to be done sometimes. It sucks, but it's better than it suffering.

I know there is a typo in there but that statement made me chuckle.

While understand if a dog is suffering it needs to be put down but this idiot is not a vet and I'm sure not smart enough to be a vet so that's not his call. But that's right just discard that one and get another, that's how people like that work.

You can have working dogs and care for them properly

What leads you to think this dog wasn't cared for? Just because he had to put the damn thing down, doesn't mean he didn't take care of it.

Well, we could all fell better and sing into the sunset if he had just left it layin in pain in a pile of shite and puddle of piss then had a vet charge Himes 150 to diagnose him int the AM, board him for two days while running tests, charge him 300 more bucks then give him a shot to kill him.

Matter of fact, in my reality that is what i will say happened, and the dog is somehow less dead to me now.

Just go away. This is the OB. It was a working dog, not part of the OP family. GET IT?

Some people never do.

It's a fricking hunting dog. If a man can't kill his own dog anymore, what the hell kinda place are we living in? I have no problem with a man killing his own damn healthy dog, much less a cripple.

We probably won't convince each other so there is no need to argue.

I have experience with working hunting dogs. If I had a cracker jack dog I would have tried to get some sort of professional input before putting it down. But, that's just me.

Ok,lets play differential diagnosis:

tic palsy
spinal cord injury
tumor invasion and cord compression
posioning
intracranial tumor and mass effect
stroke
autoimmune disorder with bilateral lumbar ridiculopathy
fractured spine with localized cord compression due to edema
snake bite (a form of posioning)

Of these only two have a possible minimally costly intervention.
Most would require expensive testing and imaging to further diagnose.
Many vets (assuming you chose not to do expensive testing or surgery) would recommend observation, a trial coarse of antibiotics and high dose steriods, and inform you that the there is a slim chance he would get better but if he is no better in 2 days he should be put down.

So what do you do?

A) Allow dead dog walking (dragging in this case) to suffer for 2-4 days before succumbing to dehydration?
B) Go to vet to spend 200 dollars to put your dog down?
C) Go to vet and spend thousands of dollars on imaging and IV hydration and surgical procedures for a $75 tool?
D) Shoot dog ending its misery for 15 cents?
