Truck AC help
Posted on 8/3/16 at 8:10 am
Posted on 8/3/16 at 8:10 am
2003 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab 1500HD
AC only blows on high setting (5)
No air blows on 1-4
Blows plenty cold but only on high setting.
Any idea what the problem may be and the cost to get it fixed?
Thanks

If the fan only works on one setting, and no other then usually it's the blower motor resistor in the airbox next to the fan.
If its not that it's the fan itself.
DIY resistor change
Very common thing to fail.

Any idea cost wise at a mechanic for the blower motor?

it's always the blower motor resistor when the fan only works on high

That youtube video looks pretty easy to do myself and part is less than $40.
MeauxJeaux - is this something that is as easy as it looks or could I really screw it up. I am not mechanically inclined, but willing to try if it is as easy as the video.

it's as easy as changing out your wiper blades. Find a Carquest nearby and buy one. Don't buy one online because often the aftermarket resistors don't last very long and you'll pay hell getting it warrantied. Carquest has the best aftermarket resistors and should anything happen to it they will give you a no hassle replacement.
And those are 2 7mm bolts that hold it on. Not a common socket size for people to have. Hopefully you have a 1/4 drive ratchet, short extension and 7mm socket.

have no idea. I always get the BWD ones. Just ask the salesman the one most often sold to the repair shops.
Posted on 8/3/16 at 10:06 am to meauxjeaux2
I am gonna assume since the $25 one and $105 one are both BWD I can use either. I have a 20% off coupon that is only available if I order it online thru the link in my earlier post.
Thanks for all the great info.
I do have a basic mechanics set of socket wrenches so I assume I have a 7mm, but will check at home this evening.

Lmao I have a 2005 Silverado and numbers 1&2 don't blow but 3, 4, and 5 do
Also, I can just be driving down the highway and the drivers side vents will just start blowing hot air while the passenger side still blows cold
All I have to do is turn my truck off then back on to get it to work normal again

I'm a DIYer. I do my own engine and tranny rebuilds. Can't help with mechanic, but I say any mechanic who charges more than one hour labor is cheating you.
It's likely not the fan.

I ordered the part and am picking it up on my way home.
Thanks to your youtube link I am pretty sure I can change the resistor motor myself.
I will post results.
Thanks.

I have a 05 gmc. For years only 1-4 worked. 5 just turned it off.
Yesterday morning my ac went kaput. I took it to the shop and they replaced the resistor. Now 5 works again. I'm pumped. $144 was the total cost.
There was a recall on my model for faulty wiring or wiring it in a way that could lead to corrosion. I should have taken it to the shop went I got the letter but never did.

I am getting the part for $22 bucks at Advanced Auto Parts and per the youtube link and other online tutorials, it should take me roughly 10-15 mins.
I will report back. I will be damn happy if $22 bucks and 15 mins saves me the headache of getting my truck to the shop and spending $150

Hope it works for you. I'm not a mechanic and my ac went out on a day when it got up to 98 degrees. I wasn't about to tinker with it myself out in that heat not even knowing where to start. Apparently $144 is a little high, but frick it I had my truck back in 2 hours and the ac was working better than it had in years.

Changed the blower resistor motor. Now all settings work except setting 4. 1-3 and 5 work. So better then previous when only setting 5 worked but still something going on. All in all i am better off now than earlier.
$50 part and roughly 30 mins of my time. Not bad.

Should've changed the plug too.
