Minn Kota uses way more plastic than Motorguide. I'm running Minn Kota right FWIW.

when you get down to it both are very good reliable trolling mtrs...MG probably is less expensive when you compare thrust/price...I like the set up and handling of the MK...I've had both...just make sure you get more thrust than you need for your boat...you'll wish you did once you get on the water I can promise you that...

If the boat is going in salt water, go with a Riptide and it's not even close. A 70 or 80# motor is plenty.

It's a different type of "plastic." I talked to a MK rep about it. MK plastic is more of a composite material and the braces inside the head are predominantly stronger material, whereas the braces inside a MG head are the same cheap arse plastic as the outer shell.

If you fish around stumps or any underwater obstruction do not buy a Motorguide. MK Fortrex 24v. I and my two sons switched from MG to MK last two years and it's the first time ever none of us had to put a trolling motor in the shop. The MK lifetime warranty on the shaft makes it worth the slightly higher price.

I just went with the 24 volt minn kota riptide with ipilot link. It takes some getting used to using a remote and I wish there were an indicator that told you which direction the head was pointed for when you are at the back of the boat but I think I will get the hang of it. I do like the spot lock feature alot. great when I am throwing the cast net

Update: Someone offered me a 55# saltwater minn Kota riptide for $250. What do y'all think, worth it or would it be more of a frustration?

Not enough thrust, imo.
