I've got a 20f xpress bay my old 80 min Kota finally died. Looking for a new trolling motor do you think I could get away with a 54lb thrust ?

You could get away with the 54

But

Consider potential conditions you may fish in....wind, strong tide movement, vegetation, etc.
For coditions such as these the 54 will not be sufficent

If it were my boat I would at least stay with the 80

54? We have a 55 on a 17', it moves it good but a 20" Xpress, I wouldn't.

I'd at least put 80# thrust replacement, but more than likely put an extra battery, go 36v, and 112# thrust...

We have a 20' Express with the 80 minkota. Works great. If you can swing it get the i-pilot with position hold feature.

I'd get atleast an 80#. You will be thankful on windy days or strong current.

I just pulled a 109# 36 volt Motorguide off my boat for an ipilot.

Message me if you are interested.

My h20 bay has the 70, it works fine usually but more would help on windy days.

Why downsize? Cost? Weight?

I've got a 70 mk on my 20 ft xpress CC. My local guy at the trolling motor repair shop says even that is too small for that size boat, and he sees that setup get burned up all the time.

Sounds like you have a 12V system. IF you want to stay with 12V system, just pick out the trolling motor with the most Ft Lb. If you want to go 24 or 36V, then do the same but with iPilot or alike.

when i had my h20b, i replaced the 70lb 24v with a 82lb 24v. it was nice to have the extra thrust. i would never go down in thrust.

a 54 lb thrust would be funny to observe from another boat on a windy day

I would stick with at least a 70lb on a 20ft alum boat. My FIL has a 70lb minnkota on a 16ft bass tracker. damn thing will throw you out of the boat.

Wouldnt his current 80lb be a 24v system? I see no reason to ever downgrade on trolling power.

I had a 17 ft Express and the wind can be hell so I would be careful not to go too small.
