The wife and I are in the preliminary stages of getting a trip planned to Glacier right after Labor Day. Neither of us have been before, and I would like some tips about what to do and what to avoid.
I am an avid photographer and would like tips on the most scenic spots to photograph.
We haven't even booked lodging yet, so suggestions in this would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Windsor National Park in Canada is amazing. Especially Prince of Wales Lodge.

I don't have a passport yet, but I certainly want to go into Canada being it is so close.

Going to the Sun Road is the most beautiful drive I've ever made. Only thing close would be Hwy 1 through the keys

Lake McDonald is amazing
Hidden Lake is also incredible.

If you can wait until the third week of September it will be less crowded. Of course you may get snow then also. If you are going week after Labor Day book lodging now if possible.

Everywhere is scenic. We spent 5 days there last year and one day in Waterton Park Canada. There aren't many bad spots. Two Medicine is less crowded. Many Glacier and Going To Sun Road area are crazy crowded but beautiful. Iceberg lake, ptarmigan tunnel, grinnel glacier are all 10-15 mile hikes you can get to in one day. But better be ready for 3000' elevation gain.

How far are you willing to hike from the pavement? 10 mile hike gets you to some nice places for day hikes. I haven't been to Hole in the Wall but that is my next trip plans. Maybe in September.

You will see grizzlies and moose. Be prepared. They can get you. Moose maybe more crazy than bears.

I've heard this also. I suppose that this road is still accessible in the early fall?

Well neither the wife or I are seasoned hikers. We are casual tourist that do the occasional hiking while on vacation. We have done some 5 mile hikes in the Smokies, but I imagine it's much steeper here?

This doesn't help my already fearing soul!

It should be open until late September early October. Depending on snowfall. The shuttles will be shutdown.

Not steeper. I'm in the Smokies now rafting and hiking. Long grades that were made for pack animals for the most part. 5 miles in Smokies is just as tough or tougher than 5 in Glacier. Depending on grade. Elevation isn't a big deal because most trail are 7-8000' elevation at highest. You can get higher but that involves off trail most of the time.

Shuttles are good for hiking a few loops in the park. Not needed but can be handy to utilize.

I've read that it kinda becomes a ghost town right after Labor Day? Maybe the article was wrong?

Labor Day is biggest weekend. Week after still busy but gets better. Really the crowds weren't a problem for us other than the going to sun road. Just get in the road at dawn. After lunch it gets crazy. Took us 4 hours to drive it. And that wasn't stopping and getting out anywhere.

Wanted to add that was last week of July.

Wow. I never would have guessed that a place that's so remote would get so much traffic?

We went in August 13 years ago. It was crowded but not crazy crowded when we were there.

Also, if you have much of a faint heart for heights be careful on Going to the sun road. There are places where you will go around a hairpin curve in the road and you can see straight down for 2-3000 feet. The passenger has it the worst. I thought my dad was going to lose it. He wanted to turn around and go back.

Good to know. I don't really fear heights though.

No worries, the bears stick to their own country and want nothing to do with you.
