With the honey added, it gets really sticky and is hard for the coon to get it off the tree. They have to work at it for a bit and that leaves more time for a leg to get caught. It was very rare to see stolen bait and no coon unless the trap malfunctioned(we screwed up the set). The strong smell would carry for a LOOOONG way too.

Yeah, adult wild foxes are tame and function well indoors. Trapping injured foxes with clamps for chump change fur is ridiculous when you can use a live cage trap and keep them healthy, because they are still worth thousands alive and healthy as adults.

People have no idea what great pets these animals make, and they are awesome small game hunting pals that can sense the location of anything underground.

Cause I don't want them alive. I don't trap to make a living. I trap to get rid rid of the predators that are decimating our quail and Turkey populations.

Are you really still talking about domesticating a fox?

Its killing me. Surface level freezing and when they step on the crust its firing whether or not they are on the middle of the pan. With an inch plus of rain this morning and low tonight of 5, I'm going to board over my traps in am and give it a few days. Everything will be frozen in solid anyway. Did catch one yote this am but had 3 more fired traps. Was pouring on me so pics kind of sucked, I'll see if I can find a good one but not holding my breath.

I didn't catch anything but a crow. Smoke you jinxed me on the crow when you posted you caught one the other day. I was reading thinking I haven't caught one in years then lo and behold there it was
I did sell some today the Grey's brought 25 across the board. That bobcat brought 50 and the coons went for 8 to ten dollars depending on size. That big coyote he told me I would have to pay him to take it
Cause of the freeze I am going to pull traps for a couple of days but I will get back to it probably Wednesday

All it takes is table salt sprinkled on top of your set to keep it from freezing. While setting them as soon as I get them bedded I sprinkle salt then and when I finish sifting the dirt to cover I salt it again. You can also buy glycol and mix with water in a spray bottle to spray on your sets.

I learned the hard way about frozen sets. When you get out 50+ land sets only to find out they are all froze up the next morning. I know it doesn't get that cold down in the south that often but that week it was in the 20s every night.

Really the only reason I am pulling them is cause when it gets that cold my chore list grows and really won't have time to check like I like to. Busting ice off water troughs ain't near as much fun as trapping but the cows appreciate it

Ive started using KCl on my sets if its just cold and ut does work great. I made the mistake of taking to many people in ride alongs and i end up forgetting stupid things. Have three more days of precip this week so im going to try and get caught up fleshing.

Ive been trying to teach several of my students and try and flesh/dry their first catch for them. Its has me behind in my own stuff.

Awesome thread, brought back great memories. I used to trap when I was a kid for my spending $$. Got my first dozen victors for Christmas when I was 10.

Its amazing that the prices for hides are damn near exactly what they were over 30 years ago, I got (on avg) $3 for a possum, $10 for a coon, $30-40 for foxes and around $60 for a bobcat or nice mink.

You know a guy named Jackie Malone? He's a federal trapper and head of ya'lls state association and the state rep for the NTA. Never met him but talked a lot of trapping with him. He's a good fellow.
