I'm all for shooting dogs that are allowed to roam, BUT for a responsible dog owner to have his dog shot IN HIS OWN YARD is total bullshite.
This is the one time I'm for knee-capping a dude for shooting a dog.
With the later info you provided about entry and where the round ended up, I'm gonna change my speculation and say it was .22 LR and someone was definitely meaning to kill your dog. No two ways about it.
