Any of you baws have a recommendation on going one route or the other. 1. Don't necessarily want to spend the jack on a scope, but will. Looking at the Leupold LTO and the flir scout tk as far as monos. 2. Have a Sightmark Photon nv scope already, and thinking I could scan easier with the mono rather than having to scan with my gun, and pick up with nv/ir flashlight once acquiring in thermal.

Anyone have either the Leupold or the flir? If so, what distances have you picked up heat signatures and what distance could you tell what it was? Appreciate any advice y'all have.

Used a buddies Leupold LTO to try it out. I wasn’t impressed. Ended up buying the Flir Scout. The Flir is cheaper and better in my opinion. It’s clearer, has ability to snap photos and the eye relief on the LTO sucks for hunting. The only drawback to the Flir is the batteries aren’t self serviceable.

I killed a doe 2 weeks ago at 90 yds I would have never seen with my naked eye because of brush and cover.

10-4 on that. I was checking them out in cabelas a few weeks ago and thought the same thing in comparing the two. I could only get a short distance in the store to compare, but was thinking the flir was the better unit. Thanks for the heads up.

Depends what you'll be using it for. If it's strictly for scanning the surrounding terrain, you'll be better suited for monocular. If it's for night hunting, you'll definitely want to the scope. I use a flir monocular and it's very nice.

Do they work well for game recovery? I was looking at the LTO and Flir a little bit recently and it was hard to find if anyone had much real world game recovery stories with them.

That's kinda my conundrum. I have a nv scope on top op of my 300, so I could scan with the thermal and then switch to the nv. Seems like it would be easier to scan 360 with a handheld rather than the scope on top of a rifle.

I would think that it would aid in the recovery as long as the body of the animal is still warm.

I would imagine it would be great for this, especially during colder days. The only issue might be not being able to let the deer sit for a while like normal. One thing, I have a chocolate for tracking now, and it has been pretty jam up regarding recovery. He is a tracking fool and found a bunch of deer this year. I don’t know that I will ever not have a track dog now.

Sorry to get to you late. Awesome recover tool. It won't see through thick brush, but a warm carcass on a cool night sticks out in a major way. I'll try to get you a pic of what I'm talking about tonight.

This model doesn't take pictures. The ones posted below are from me half arse getting my phone to take them through eyepiece. It's supposed to pick up a man sized target at 1000 meters.

1st pic is heat detection set to display white. 2nd is on "instant recognition" which shows heat as orange.

Both were taken with outside temp of 61 degrees.

I used the LTO last weekend on a hog hunt with great success. It was simple to use. Good for tracking and spotting. I can scan large fields and see thermal signature from 300yards. It isn’t very clear. I was just looking at hot spots and stalking and then verifying with nightvision.

It was an impulse buy the day before the hunt through and FFL friend.

I haven’t seen the Flir but wouldn’t doubt it is just as good or better..

Thermal scopes would have tripled our kills... night vision can be a pain..

I had to get within 50 yards to tell a difference between hogs and deer if they were not moving.
