re: The Official Kayak Thread
But wait if we compile a big thread on kayaks and get it stickied .. Doesn't that mean there won't ever be any new OB threads??

re: The Official Kayak Thread
That's what this is. Just go to the stickied thread and bump it with kayak related stuff. It happens with the threads in the mega thread a lot

Any mobile bay kayakers in here? I've taken mine out probably 15-20 times with little to no luck. Some white trout and flounder around mobile yacht club. The one and only redfish I caught in the bay though was 41" long, mouth of weeks bay for him. Basically I'm begging for spots that don't involve a 2 mile paddle

Im from fairhope but have never taken my yak out in the bay. I would imagine hitting the lights on the piers at night on the eastern shore wouldn't be too bad out of a yack. Put in at mullet point or the grand hotel

The piers are always just stacked with jokers at night..I've been to mayday and fairhope pier at night to catch bait before and there's always 5-10 people fishing/waiting for a jubilee

you know of a place to launch that would be an easy paddle to dixey bar?

re: The Official Kayak Thread
As I've stated before, a very useful website for rigging questions, fishing techniques (offshore vs. inshore), classifieds etc. is

texaskayakfisherman (is it against the rules for me to post another forum on TD??)

Keep in mind it's a texas based website so any spot information is pretty useless unless you want to make a trip over here. I'm open to taking anyone around here inshore fishhing (although it sucks compared to inshore in LA) and BTB(beyond the breakers) for sharks, jacks, kings, bull reds etc. It's pretty exciting/challenging and nothing like going for a 30 minute ride being pulled by a 5' or larger black tip. I've posted a few gopro videos of some BTB fishing before. If you want to rig up for this type of fishing you need to make sure you've got at least a 50' anchor rope, bruce claw anchor, buoy for the anchor which should be detachable so you can leave the anchor while being pulled and see your buoy to come back to it.

A useful tool for locating launch spots all over is: LINK

A few other good kayaks brands that should be added are Wilderness Systems (specifically the tarpon model of various lengths) and Ocean Kayak. I have the ocean kayak prowler 13'. It's served it's purpose very well especially for buying it $600 used and rigged pretty well.

Safety

All kayakers should have:
Life Jacket on board. I don't necessarily wear mine all the time inshore especially in shallow water where I could stand but 100% of the time while BTB fishing.
Safety Whistle
Waterproof VHF's come in handy (coast guard channel-16, recreational channel-69)
Be able to tie down equipment is useful especially in hairy waters.
If you aren't capable of getting back in a kayak after rolling you shouldn't be in one because you never know what can happen.
As always, let someone know when and where you're going if you're going by yourself. A few kayakers a year die/drown here in Texas.

Accesories that make life easier

Cushioned back pad/seat
Anchor trolley - almost a necessity in my book if you ever anchor as it allows you to position your kayak better while anchored
Fish bag for stowing fish or a stringer
Rod holders. I'm rigged with 2, sometimes 3 for spair pre-rigged alternative lures/bait.
Extra set of pliers(i've lost 2 to the drink)
Small first aid kit stowed in hatch. Maybe a small bottle of bleach/iodine for any cuts you might get? A few people here recently have gotten the flesh eating bacteria and ended up in pretty bad shape. I don't personally carry any.
Water Proof pouch for phone etc.
Depth Finder - I have a cheapo with transducer mounted to inside hull, very easy set up
Rudder. Don't own one but I've heard they help.

Also buy a GoPro so we can watch some of you people not catch any fish.

If you have any other questions on anything, I can probably answer or at least make something up that sounds about right.

Pretty boring BTB video but it's the only one I've made

Skoosh Pads are a kayakers (unless you are in a Native) friend.

Also, I put sections of 6 in pool noodles on my paddle so I can lay it in the water (attached to the leash) and it floats.
