This is the only video I can find of someone launching through surf, but its in Clearwater, FL and gulf waves are a bit different than Pacific waves: LINK

I've been able to track down a couple owners on Reddit/Youtube and they both said it can work in the ocean but to launch from a ramp or cove if you can and not directly into the surf, and its best to go out on nice calm days. Suggested launching in a bay and pedaling out to sea instead of going directly through the surf

We will see. It's really my only option because of my limited transportation, if I get an Outback I would have to dock it at a marina and would be limited to the area around the marina. Wouldn't be able to take it to lakes without renting a truck.

I'd really look hard at that new Old Town Topwater 120 PDL they announced yesterday. MSRP is $2150 I think. Spend another $500 on a good depth finder and kan you're in business for anything. For any type of serious kayak fishing out of San Diego, fresh or salt, a good graph is a must in my opinion. Through the weekend, Old Town is running 10% most kayaks including the topwater pdl angler (10' pedal yak) knocking it to around $1800 and on the predator pdl knocking it down to around $2500 I think. I personally think the old town pdl drive is the best pedal drive on the market. It is a sealed drive that floats and was designed with Minn Kota (Old Towns sister company).

There are ways to car mount damn near any kayak so I wouldn't let that stop you.

Well shite.

Ok.

Let me start over.

If you want to consistently target and catch yellowtail, rockfish and halibut (the 3 most desirable and highly sought after nearshore fish out of LA jolla) then the Hobie i11s is NOT the best boat for that. It has significant rigging limitations and getting in and out of the surf on less than perfect days could lead to disaster. You'll also need good electronics to target those species and probably somewhere around $500+ for the rods, reels, tackle, bait tanks, etc...

All of that being said, I have no doubt that the i11s is a well made, enjoyable and functional pedal sup/kayak. If your primary purpose is recreation and still water fishing, I think youll be pleased especially given your transportation limitation.

Hobie to me is the Apple of kayaks- super functional and user friendly but you probably pay a little more for brand recognition. Rarely do they lay an egg and you'll always be able to find a community of people to bounce ideas off of.

The i11s will be superbly positioned to have you catching freshwater fish as well as kelp bass, etc.. in protected marine environments. On good surf days, it is perfectly capable of taking you offshore, but you should never plan on that. Mission Bay and the local bass lakes will be your friend.

In 5 years the kayak game is going to change tremendously. Hobie may still be the top brand, but I honestly think the prop drives are going to be comparable or better than the mirage drive. Only time will tell. All in all it will be good for the kayak industry in general.

I can't believe you still think this way. You can still carry a paddle. Instant reverse is a bigger game changer than peddling itself.
