Oh the fish were hungry as hell this morning, I just either couldn't reach them, couldn't set the hook, or they were missing the fly. Regardless, it's badass watching a fish hit a top water

Think about it, the more air the fly catches the harder for the line to turn over. You could also shorten the leader.
ETA: cut the hook off the fly and practice you casting with it. Also, practice while on your knees and sitting.

Where is the closest place in Arkansas to fish for trout from Shreveport/Bossier? I just got back from Gatlinburg where we caught probably 40 or so brook and rainbows in between vacation activities. The only reason we caught them though is our cabin was on the bank of the west prong of the Little Pigeon River about 1/2 mile from where they release stock fish weekly and is pretty much private around the camp. (No good access) Really gave me the fly fishing itch. Just got back yesterday and already trying to line up a weekend trip. Lol
On another note I am 100% a newbie and bought an Echo Base 9' 4/5 weight rod for $90 and am using an el cheapo White River reel. Can I upgrade enough for it to be noticeable for $300 until I make sure my desire stays this high? Bought the rod from Smoky Mountain Angler which is where I was buying flys.

Beavers Bend State Park near Broken Bow. Great fishing, but it's gotten pretty popular so go during the week or in the rain if you can. If you want a guide up there I can't recommend Rob Woodruff highly enough.

was this on the end of a tapered leader or did you just have 8' of tipet or something along those lines? If you just had a piece of level tippet as a leader, trying a tapered leader will likely help.
Another frequent cause of tailing loops is "trying too hard." What I mean by that is you want/need distance so you try to get it by pushing extra hard on that last forward cast. This usually results in a tailing loop rather than the distance you wanted.

Got a few triples this weekend. Only one keeper though, and my girlfriend caught it on fly haha.
My old man's birthday is this weekend. He's been wanting this reel for literally years. So, I got him an early birthday present.

Anyone ever fished near hot springs, AR in August? We're headed up there in a few weeks, and I can probably sneak away for a morning. Not picky on species and open to a guide.

Looking to get a entry level kit to get started fly fishing bream and bass in my pond. What's yalls recommendation on setup for a newbie? Stopped in orvis on lunch break last week and they had the encounter package for $169. Guy there recommended the 5 wt

Tibor FTW!
If any of you baws are down in Florida, we have been KILLING the reds/trout in Mosquito Lagoon the past 3 weeks.. Don't know what happened but it just turned on. Before 3 weeks ago we would average maybe 4 or 5 shots a day and now its up in the 20's with some big trout thrown in.

I'm not a huge fan of them, but he's wanted it for years so whatever. I know they're awesome reels...just so damn loud haha. I also don't like the closed off look. I like the looks of the signature series though.
Sweet photos. Glad yall are getting on some fish down there.

Personally, the looks and noise bother me.

Closet place in Arkansas will probably be the Little Red River in Heber Springs. It is the tail water of Greers Ferry Lake. From there you are couple hours from the White River. There is also the Spring River in the Northeast corner of the state, which is where I'm heading to fish this evening and in the morning.

What size bass? For small, 12-14 in bass and bream I'd want a 3 or 4wt. I'm not familiar with the encounter package.
On the OP of this thread I have posted a link many online fly shop links. Can often find some good deals in those if you look closely.

For waders, I have the Frogg Togg Hellbenders. I can't understate the value and bang for your buck on these waders:
Just saw this jumbo post of yours. How do you like these? I had them once and they started leaking a bit after 1.5 years.
I decided they were my last Frogg Togg waders and went back to LL Beans.

I wear one of those Buffs on the river. I burn terribly and I know some guys wear these things to take pictures in and look like ninjas or some shite, but this legit keeps me from getting scorched. Kinda looks like this:
Do these things not get hot? If not I need one.

I wear Korkers wading boots. Again, very reasonably priced, and a high value.
How many years on these? For some reason I've always been skeptical but have nothing to base that on.

I use a Brodin net. Specifically, their "Phantom" series. This net is top notch and I will never need to use a different brand. Brodin Nets
Pretty light? I feel like my net weighs too much and I'll probably get another one within a year or so.
Agree on Rio line products. I'm pretty much back to them exclusively for tippet and leaders.
