if you take care of a $70 Shimano, it will last a really long time

You will probably be using some baits that are too light for bait casting. Stay with a spinning reel. I'm a Shimano fan. Look at the Symetre. I also like a 7 ft rod. Brand is whatever you want to do. All Star, st Croix, fenwick, etc.

If you already know a BC, don't back pedal for those fish.
7' rod is nice with your BC of choice. I just like Shimano.
Go get 'em!

I bought a package deal from Cabela's...I think it's their 7' Tourny-Trail IM7 rod with a Shimano Sedona 2500 spinning real. I freaking love it, and it only cost $90.

I mainly bass fish, but I use shimano. Best stuff IMO for the price.

In my opinion, if you learned how to use a baitcaster, you wouldn't go back.

That said I like 6 or 6.5 foot rods. Stiff ones preferably. With shimano reels

If you spend over $200 on a spinning setup you're retarded unless it's a finesse or dropshotting rig and most of the money is in the rod

Spinning reels are prevelant down there for a reason. You have a lot of wind coming from Atlantic or GOM. Water is much clearer there than LA so longer casts are also required thus more backlashes if windy. Get a Shimano Saros, get a medium action rod with a little backbone to drag fish out of mangroves. Spend money on reel first down there, the salinity is brutal on gears. Upgrade your rod when you can.
