Stocking Gun Safe?

I got a new smaller gun safe where I could have room for more ammo. I am getting more self defense loads in 9mm and 38 special. I am getting more magazines also.
Are there self defense loads for the AR-15 (5.56 or .223) or are these necessary? If there are no actual self defense loads what is the best type (grain or brand) to get for self defense?
I want to get this in case the costs go crazy again.

Gonna go out on a limb and say that I’m pretty sure if you zip a mofo at close range with a 55gr to 77gr bullet it really isn’t gonna matter what type of bullet it is. Fmj’s will get it done with clean pass through’s and at inside the house ranges a ballistic tip or the like will do the same. Just be aware you will be slinging bullets through walls as well even after passing through said intruder.

I ended up getting 60 rounds of these. I also got another 100 rounds of regular .223 rounds.

The free gun range that I go to is getting ready to reopen after going through a total redo.

The Rangers and Delta learned in the Battle of Somalia that green tips went thru and thru the skinnies that where hyped up on khat, Shortly thereafter different units started experimenting with Black Hills 77 grain Sierra bullets which have a hollow cavity and got much better results.
IMO there are better weapons for home defense, namely the shotgun.

Your best bet with ARs for home defense is to have a good plan that minimizes, if not outright removes over penetration risk. My current house plan is the corner stairs are the killzone, and I'll be shooting down into my foundation and away from any other house. If that somehow fails, I have pistols with hollow points.

While not really a hollow point, the IMI 77 grain razor core 5.56 is supposed to be wonderfully accurate. But I’ve yet to try this particular round. But as others have said, if you are defending around your home, shotgun is the way to go. Don’t wanna be spraying and praying 5.56 rounds that will go through your wall, and possibly through the neighbor’s wall or window.

I agree

At close range (inside the house) it will most likely fragment into a bunch of pieces. This is especially true with a 55 grain fmj. What pieces do exit the body will have very little mass, and therefore not much momentum left to punch through a wall and still be lethal on the other side.
Interesting Test

Benelli M4 short barrel is the way to go for home defense. Remember, a pistol is what you use to fight your way to a real gun.

I highly recommend everyone to go watch the multitude of videos that test penetration capabilities of 9, 00 buckshot, 556, 7.62x39.
Every round is shockingly (or not) capable of penetrating 5+ rounds of sheetrock.
The thought that a 556 round over penetrates more than a pistol round really does not stack up. A 9mm will exit all the walls of your house just as easily as the 556. I’m not going to go so far as to say that 9mm will penetrate more walls but there have been tests that show this does occur.
With all that said give me 30 rounds of federal fusion msr any day over a 9mm or a 00 buck.
