first thing I would have done is find out why the lawn is bare...Mole Crickets over fertilization etc...
sprinkle some 8-8-8 on the bare spots(unless you burned it with fertilizer to begin with) and the st aug will run to it...
if it's dead from insects use some orthomax to kill them, or it will just get eaten again...

To get faster spread, you should have cut those slabs into smaller ones to get more surface area and thus more runner growth. That will take more than a year to cover.

Don't water at night. St. Augustine is very prone to fungus and letting it stay damp all night promotes in. Best to do early morning.

It's a huge problem for mine, I hit it with fungicide every couple of months or risk losing huge patches of the yard which has happened. It did grow back after I figured it out but it took almost a year to look decent again.
