I haven't planted them before, but want to get some soybeans in the ground this year. What is the timing on this and what do I need to do to prep? just cut what is there from winter and disc it up?

This is Pearl River county MS.

Yep, but if plots aren’t real big the deer will destroy them quickly.

The good thing is they hammer them. The bad thing is they hammer them.
Tried to plant a 1.5ac plot and they wiped them out before anything really came up. And the weeds started in before I could get it sprayed, RR beans.
Can you plant 3-5 acers? Do you have the ability to spray it when you need to for weed control?

You should burndown the plots using glyphophate and 2-4D. Plant soybeans April 15-May 15. There are two products that seem to prevent deer from browsing on them. The problem is rains was it away. You may need to spray quite a few times, when plants are young. The products are Hinder and Plantskydd. The Plantskydd probably works better, as it is a dried cow blood. Best to premix/dissolve first in buckets with a drill and paint mixer. Stinks like shite.

I was planning on planting an acre of Imperial Whitetail PowerPlant on the place i hunt in SE Oklahoma. Should i not bother? It says it is a forage type vining soybean and climbing forage peas, sunflowers and sunn hemp. If the deer are just gonna mow it down and that's it, i don't want to spend the money.

You are planting it for the deer to eat

I know, but it's supposed to last all summer. If they are just going to eat it all once it begins coming up and basically kill everything, i'm not going to waste my time.

You’ll probably end up with just sun hemp and soy bean stalks. The forage soybeans work well but never get over a few inches tall. I’ve read it takes deer a year or two to get used to eating sun hemp.

I'm in Poplarville, off hwy 53 heading east out of town.

just had a ton of hogs show up on camera this week, planning on going up this weekend to take a few down. Have actually had some decent bucks on camera this season, decent for our area anyway, and they are still hanging around.

Thinking some spring food may keep them around longer...

Do mineral licks/blocks. A lot less work and last whole summer.

When I plant my fall plots I always have clover mixed in so when my fall plots go dormant, the clover will last till heat of summer. I also have feeders running year round in these plots.

If hogs are around then I’d suggest doing nothing unless you want them around.

Friend of mine sprays Miller Hot Sauce on his sunflowers. I imagine you could spray it on soybeans. Supposedly it burns their mouth if they browse on the food.

I switched from soybeans to a mix of

iron clay 50#
lablab 10#
sunflowers 5#

Thats per acre. I use the cheap black oil sunflowers that are for bird seed. The sunflowers will let the beans grow upwards and produce more peas. Ive had better success with them over soybeans or corn.

Been doing it the last few years late april to early may. After last frost.

I spray mid April to get a good kill before I disk and plant.

I also have been getting better germination since I got a cultipacker.

I'm gonna try some glyphosate resistant soybeans this year and maybe use milorganite to see if that will keep them off the small plants until they are established.
