FWIW, most of the posters on shotgunworld have no fricking clue what they're talking about. Especially when it comes to ballistics, aerodynamics, etc. of shotshells.

The worst is, by far, Randy Wakeman. Dude got a hydraulics certification 30 years ago and poses as a world class aerodynamicist and ballistics engineer.

Has anyone ever taken a duck load and replaced it with #8 shot?

I just popped the crimp and loaded some with 1 3/8oz of #8 birdshot. Going to test this weekend and see how it patterns at longer ranges.

I would consider anything other than blowing yourself up a great success.

7/8oz 7 1/2

Winchester Super Sport

They are running around 1300fps. I use IC choke 90% of the time.

I've done it before and killed birds. Just never tested how well it patterns. Same weight loading as the original steel

Glad to hear it's worked out for you. However, I'm just not a fan of cooking up unpublished recipes.

For a beginner, going on a quail hunt and a dove hunt for the first time, what would the OB recommend for a pair of Browning A5s? 12 and 16. One of the guys doesn't have his own gun and myself and another guy are taking him. He'll be using one of mine. They're older too so if not using steel is an issue let me know that as well.

Probably a 12 for a beginner, just for more shot. Gun will be heavier carrying on a quail hunt.

The 16 will handle better though.

I meant those are the two I have. Was looking more for recs on shells specific to older shotguns.

Not gonna make a second thread for this, but what chokes do y'all use with your shell load of choice?

I agree. But I don't think he posts on shotgunworld.

Some of the master class shooters on SGW have excellent frames of reference on terminal ballistics. I think they probably offer better perspectives than the average shooter on the average outdoor board.

Just my $.02 worth.

I like Estate shells for dove. Once and a eighth or quarter if they have them.

I like 7.5s

When I take my 20 I usually have sure shot.

For me I think it is not so much which brand I shoot but that I shoot the same brand the whole season.

If you want tighter patterns then have the forcing cone of the barrel extended by a gunsmith . Doing this will minimize the number of deformed shot in the string, therefore a denser pattern.
Second, shoot ammo that skeet and sporting clays shooters use, Winchester or Remington, Rio or Estate. Competition shells have better components, therefore better performance, more dense patterns.
Third, get quality aftermarket screw in extended chokes. More consistent, reliable patterns.
Last, get yourself to a skeet range and practice. You can spend all the money in the world on components but if you're a bad shot it's all for nothing. A shot string can be eight to ten feet in length so be in front of the moving object.
