As we’re going through this, some more questions:
What’s required for him to get a title transfer for boat and trailer?
Do both parties go to a notary at the same time?
Would it go in my son’s name?

Go to notary for a notarized bill of sale and transfer title of trailer. Take the notarized bill of sale and the title and registration for boat to LA DEPT of wildlife and fisheries (or mail it in) and be done with it. Fairly easy to do.

Does the seller have to meet at the same place to get it notarized?
So there’s no notarized bill of sale for the boat itself? What if they’re purchased separately?

I’ve always done 2 bills of sale……one for the boat and motor and one for the trailer. Notarize both bills of sale and the title for the trailer when you meet to do the exchange. Coordinate with a notary to be present.

Who creates a “bill of sale?” Is it just a sentence on a blank sheet of paper that’s notarized acknowledging the sale?

I’ve always created my own bill of sale but either party can. If the seller has one that has all the needed info use his…if not yours is ready to go.
I’m assuming you’re in Louisiana so suggest using the Bill of Sale templates at the Louisiana DNV website (Sale of Moveable) and at Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries website (Sale of Boat/Motor). Using these makes sure you capture all the info they require for the transfer of titles and registration. It’s a real pain to go back to the seller and start over again if something required is missing……..ask me how I know that!

Thanks. Yes, in LA. Found a possible boat in MS.
Can my sons permit be an acceptable ID? He gets his license next week. The bill of sale form on the website says the buyer is “of legal age.” Does that mean it would have to be in my name?
In detail, what do I need to ask of the seller to provide?
1. Print Bill of sale boat/motor form from LDWF for boat / motor and have notarized
2. Print Bill of sale movable form from LA DMV and have it notarized.
What about the titles for the boat and trailer? What if there is no title for one or both?
What do I need to do to get everything registered?

You’ll need DMV to clarify legal age requirements….believe it’s 18, but think you both can be listed on the LA title…..then you can transfer to him when he turns 18.
Pretty sure Mississippi doesn’t require titles for boat trailers, so guessing a bill of sale with the right info will be critical to register in LA. Same with the boat and motor. Out of state just increases the hassle factor so need to make sure you understand what LA needs to title and register from out of state. Sorry not much help there

From the LDWF site:
What’s involved in satisfying the first bullet above?
Also for a separate bill of sale for the trailer, would the price all go on the boat/motor bill of sale, and the trailer one would just be $0?
quote:
If you purchased your boat from an individual who previously registered/titled the boat in another state, you must submit:
- Title and registration
- Bill of Sale of Boat/Motor

Could be as simple as providing the sellers registration documents along with the bill of sale.
I’d pass on any boat that hadn’t been previously registered. Results in another level of hassle to make it legal for you and your son.

I have found easiest way to buy a boat, is to go to some place like ABC title.
Both buyer and seller show up at same time, ABC title will handle all of the paper work with Dept of wildlife and fisher
I have done this a few times and its worth the cost in my opinion

Son thinks he found a boat.
Since he’s under 18, does the boat and trailer need to be registered in my name?

Ladwf does not require the bill of sale for the boat/motor to be notarized. You will need the title, registration, bill of sale, and the dwf form for them. You can mail their paperwork in, but I find it easier to go to the office in Baton Rouge and do it in person.
The dmv will require a notarized bill of sale and the signed title for the trailer.

Do we get all of these from the current owner? What if he doesn’t have one of them?

You will need the title and registration for the hull and trailer.
I wouldn’t entertain a purchase if the seller doesn’t have it.
The motor registration is not required by state but it’s nice to have it to prove it’s not stolen and also to have for your insurance purposes.

What kind of insurance would I need? And since son will be using, what considerations are there?

I have a 16 ft with a tiller handle, i use as a beater. 40hp yamaha 4 stroke. ITs still carbed so not much to work on. finding a beater will teach him how to work on it and fix it, but will give some rough patches out on the water.
