Snow Goose Windsock Decoy Discussion
Posted on 12/15/16 at 12:35 pm

Alright, for somewhat nostalgia and primarily budgetary reasons we've been using the old TX rags tied up on hand cut bamboo along with 48 shells/full bodies. We have about 300 total decoys.
Admittedly, it looks shitty up close, but from a distance, it ain't that bad.
However, our rags are starting to wear out and tear, and our stakes are starting to crumble as they've dried. I can see what's coming. They ain't going to last forever.
So I'm shopping around and wanting to get suggestions or opinions. Silosocks, Tanglefree Slammer Socks, White Rocks, etc. What's the best for the price?
I'm looking to replace our TX rag wind socks with legit windsocks. With heads preferably. I'd like to start with about a 100 to begin transitioning to better windsocks, and maybe add 100 a year until we can get up to a respectable spread.
Listed in Order of interest...
Tanglefree 48 Pack for $161.99
Economy Silosocks 50 pack for $149.95
White Rock Rockonomy 10 dozen for $449
Obviously, the White Rock are most expensive, but I've heard great things about their durability. These come unpainted though. Likewise, the silosocks are economy with no paint and I don't know about that stake system into the head as opposed to the "neck" of the bag. The tanglefree seem most interesting as they have paint, are on sale, and come with a similar back bone system as the White Rocks.
Spare me the "All of this for a snow goose?", I have a problem. The only cure is more geese.
Are there any other brands I should be looking at? Anybody have personal experience with any brand I listed or may have omitted?
Also, I'd like your take on what's going on. We are limited to about 800 acres of dry fields in our primary location. We see lots of geese, but haven't had a feed adjacent to the property in a couple years. That said, geese are usually on the ground somewhere within a couple miles. Most times we set up we can kill a stupid single or two, but we haven't smashed them in this particular location yet. We keep thinking we need to catch them in a fog to really work on them. Would more decoys help? Better decoys? Try to get closer to a feed/roost? Tighten up our decoys? Spread them out?
To me the fact that we are picking off a few is a good sign, I just think we need the stars to align with better decoys, bigger spread numbers, the right weather, and a big bunch of geese on the ground in the immediate area.
Any help, comment, guidance is appreciated. And just for the OB...

I can appreciate your varocity towards killing snows. They make some great sausage and the legs are equally tasty. However, I've been down this road and those bitches are damn hard to kill even with a giant spread.
Good luck
Oh and get the white rock.

Snow geese aren't fun to hunt. Just don't.
Seriously, big spreads in a fog seem to scare them. Just calling is best for me. Sillosocks look the best by far in no wind. I have several hundred just because it's easy to have one type. If I had consistent wind is look at WhiteRocks. But day in and day out SS is the best
I mix in rags on stakes when I have enough guys. Put them way upwind. You can tell which ones are rags.

You should liquidate your silosocks to me then... I'll pay a fair price.
I used to do it more often when I was younger. Then went on a decade or more run where I didn't make a single goose hunt. Got back into it last year and I've got the bug. I can't get enough of it. God forbid we actually have a morning where we kill a bunch of them. Then I will be screwed.

Here's your answer ??

Well, i have no clue about the decoy question, but in my experience with snows they either coming to your field on their own intuition, or you're wasting your time UNLESS it electric calling.

Those are my thoughts. I'm open to other suggestions.

Yeah most days you'll either luck into singles or paired snows, maybe a big flock if you're working specs
But who are we kidding specs is the real prize.

In the past, they seemed to get stupid for rag spreads. Now it seems like even they are leery. That's another reason I think I need to step up my windsock quality.

Went to TX this year and put out a tin of dekes. The giude was sponsored by tanglefree so thats what he used. They seemed to be very good quality though.
I think I liked the ones without heads better, just that much easier to mess with.

You need more than 300. You really need about 700 to make a difference. I'd buy whatever is cheapest. Snows aren't that particular or detail oriented.

I disagree with this. You do need a big group in your area, but you can get them to move from another field with the right size spread.

Is there anything that you could get to make your own? Like a roll of visquine (sp?) or something? Could knock out a couple hundred without knocking out the bank

I have made some myself out of house tyvek. Major PITA. Just get economy Sillosocks (or WhiteRocks) and put them together.

I may look into that. I'd like to try in late January or February, and if I started now doing a few each day, then maybe I'd have enough to be serviceable
I've also heard of taking yard signs (like political election signs) and making silhouettes out of those two. To supplement the others
Posted on 12/15/16 at 2:39 pm to jimbeam
We've come up with all kinds of ideas to make our own, including trash bags, walmart or Khols (Blue goose) bags, poly pipe, etc.
In the end, I'm okay with buying some quality stuff and having it show up at my door ready to hunt.

I'm working on a few of those too, but I'm not a big fan of silhouettes.

Silhouettes actually work REALLY good. Most people don't understand (or take the time to think) why they work
Posted on 12/15/16 at 3:22 pm to ChadJones4Heisman
Well I understand why, but why don't you go on and educate the class.

Silo Socks is the answer.
