Do plenty of marsh fishing but never chased red snapper or mangroves, though some buddies have been taking their bay boats to fairly close rigs and hitting them both.

Thinking of picking up a couple of combos for future trips, appreciate any recommendations on basic rod/reel set up.

Conventional? Spinning?

Edit: saw thread from last month with some suggestions, open to any others for basic rig.

I know a bunch of people will tell me how wrong I am but I have my Dad's old Penn 309 reel on a green True Temper fiberglass rod and it's never failed me yet.

For mangroves and red exclusively, spinning in the 70-90 range plus a jigging rod rated to 80lb should be sufficient. On a casting rod, a shimano takota 600 plus a jogging rod is awesome.

Cabelas had a penn 30 series openface or 6000 series spinner with rod for $150. Spook with 50# braid and Can’t go wrong with either

For mangroves we always use a 5000-6000 range spinning reel. I have two Finn nors that i bought spooled with 80# braid.

For red snapper If you don’t plan on doing it much i would just go get a conventional penn combo from academy they are around $150.

Check out the Tiger Lite jigging rod in spinning. It's an uglystik and is a very reliable rod

Thanks for all the replies, gents. Gives me some ideas to check out, especially the references to reel size and line type.

Big fan of braid for all my inshore and it sounds like plenty use it for snapper too
