This dude crept up on us last week while drinking coffee in the am. Cotton right? Best pic I could get as he was moving quickly and I dont mess with these dudes

He was a bit skinny vs the ones Im used to seeing in LA. If my son hadnt seen him he wouldve ended up under my ankles while sitting near the woodline

Moccasin. They often also have a dead animal small about them. But don’t mean you should try to sniff them. Love snakes but I kill those mean SOB’s.

Head shape and markings, as well as body shape are giveaways

if it smells like a bucket of slops that was thrown there a week ago, it's a cotton

Kill him and hang him on the fence.

I know, I'm just trying to start the Monday out with a lot of Dvotes. On a serious note, that's what the old folks did back in the day for rain.

From that photo, it is very difficult to determine wit 100% certainty. It is definitely not a racer. Most likely it is a cottonmouth but it certainly could be a water snake. That photo is 100% inconclusive.
EDIT: After seeing some of the replies I got, I had to back and check the pic again. I apparently scrolled down immediate and only saw the body portion of the pic. Never saw the head.
Yes, that's definitely a cottonmouth.

We love Gulf State Park! That’s our annual Thanksgiving camping trip location. Great weather down there that time of year and very little traffic.
What spot were y’all in? We like to get on the north side of Possum Rd next to the bike trail.
