I was looking at an American red lab pretty hard before I got the black man. Only cost me $175, so I think I came out a winner

I have one. Paid 750 from a guy in Texas. I would not recommend one. I knew better when I bought her, but she was so damn pretty I did it anyway. Too many recessive genes in one dog is asking for too many health problems.

heck of a deal on the "red" they are beautiful too. only seen one in person and it is definitely unique. im just very cautious as to paying the 800-1000+ for a dog with recessive genes like the silver and red labs... just seem like they would come with more health issues.

I don't know too much about them, but my buddy has a silver and it's the most awesome dog I've ever been around. What kind of problems do they typically have from the recessive genes?

Color absolutely does not equate to a good dog.

Hell, I even think ancestry doesn't make a good dog. Each dog is different

Joint problems for sure, someone told me once to never buy one. Within the week he had one, has spent a ton of money on knee surgeries. Beautiful dog though.

Besides the recessive gene problem I would not buy one solely on the fact that they are not proven in the field.

Does the AKC even recognize colors not Black, Yellow, and Chocolate?

I think the "nitch" breeders trying to make a buck off of people's desire for a unique looking "Lab" suck balls. to the "silver" and "fox red" breeders...

I only deer hunt so I don't have nearly as much need for a field dog as a duck hunter rather than just a good dog.

I have 2 year old charcoal lab. I actually think they look better than the silver labs. I bought a chocolate female (has the sliver gene) for my kids and bred her with a charcoal from a breeder near Houston.

Good question. The color of my lab is exactly like the pictures of the red fox labs I have seen. But she is registered as a yellow lab.

I believe AKC only recognizes black, brown and yellow. The silver falls under brown/chocolate category.
