We tried to breed the female Star back in the late spring, but the 12 year old stud she was with couldn't get it done.

Flash forward 6 months and here we are. She started bleeding Monday before last. Today is the 11th day since then. Her and the new stud have been penned up next to each other for the last 9 days. They are about to be put together to hook up, be separated when done, and allowed to hook up one more time tomorrow per the breeder's suggestion.

Hunter (left) X Star (right)

This stud was sought out because he and the female share one common ancestor. Their common grandfather was 2X National Champion Shadow Oak Bo.

Ok, looking promising...

What happened next???

Not going very good...

They have been put together the last 3 days. Zero penetration. Today is "optimal" by the book. She's not having any of it...

When she’s ready she should throw that tail out of the way. Unless she does he’s fighting a losing battle. Although, from the pic it does look like she may have. Never seen one throw it up that high, though, usually curled to the side.

Maybe she wants you to give them the room…

I’ve seen a good number of dogs that go back to Bo at various field trials. Most all of them were good, solid bird dogs. He sure was bred a lot after he won his national championships.

That's the thing. We attempted this in the spring with an old male, and he was like, "To hell with this. She's a bitch." (pun intended). We chalked it up to bad timing...

So we had our date going into this heat and had her start of heat nailed on day 1 of bright red discharge. Friday was day 11 (Will accept stud during this period). These pics were from yesterday afternoon (Day 13). We are sticking with it and they should be brought back together here in the next hour or so. Hopefully her mood has changed... The breeder said he has never seen a female not stand at some point between days 11-15, but the window closes on Wednesday and the breeder is not optimistic due her demeanor in general. Outside of heat she is a wonderful dog.

That's what I said. I thought you could just turn them loose in a yard on the correct evenings and eventually he'd hit it.

Seems forced and unnatural to me, but I'm not a breeder. I think he wants to control the situation so neither dog gets injured in case they tie up in a fight.

Dogs bang in the wild all the time though...

Yeah, the first potlikker that comes around would probably be successful.

If she ain’t ready, you can’t convince her. Tried that with some foxhounds once. Stud dog was willing, she was not. After getting snapped at several times, he lost interest, so we brought in another female to get him going again and slipped the first one underneath, took us a few hours. Finally got it done and it was all for naught as she didn’t take. I had given her shots to bring her in, and maybe it was because of that it failed.

Put a muzzle on her and hold her head forward, he'll do the rest
