Yeah caught 3 that had it, it's pretty common for coyotes to have it. It helps to control their population some but it's a terrible way to die!

No picture of the grey I had to walk in where my trap was and forgot my phone in the truck.

Nothing makes it out alive! The whole point of me trapping is to knock down some of the varmits on our club so we can have more turkeys and deer.

Yeah we do have a lot of varmits, I knocked the coyotes down pretty good but I will have to wait til next year to go after the fox hard an heavy. Atleast the fox are worth something skinned.

Like everyone else, I've enjoyed this thread. Thanks for posting.

I used a live trap made by Mustang as a kid. Checked it daily. I usually used freshly killed sparrows with my pellet gun.

Caught everything from stray cats to a red fox. Mostly possums. The worst was the skunks. First time it happened, I couldn't figure out how in the hell I was going to get it out of the trap without getting sprayed.

A friend mentioned using a rod and reel to cast a hook over the trap to turn it upside down. This trick saved the day many times.

I'm considering purchasing a live box trap for my kids to use. Do you have any suggestions?

Duke makes a good one that it very reasonable do a search for Duke cage traps.

Skunks are easy to deal with just shoot them in the ribs and they won't spray if you shoot them in the head they will release their musk. You can also cover them with a blanket and they won't spray if you want to release them live. The pro guys stick them in the side with a pole with a syringe filled with acetone attached to the end.

Thanks for the response and advice.

I'd probably attempt to save the animal, if poss. And I'm definitely not getting close enough to throw a blanket.

I'll look into the Duke traps, thanks again, and good luck with yours. I shot a 26lb female bobcat over twenty years ago, and thought it was an anomaly. The ones you've shown in this thread are beast mode. The World Book Encyclopedia says they run from 15-25lbs.

Offshore,

You want to do some trapping in St. Francisville? We have about 800 acres. I was looking at setting some traps until a buddy of mine said you have to boil the traps, dip them in wax? What's this all about? I shot two coyotes during deer season! They are there, they're barking all night long!

Makes them work smoother/quicker and protects them from rust.

Yes you have to clean and then wax them. It's not much to it really the waxing can be tricky but just remember to not get the fire too hot or the wax will explode. The reason for doing this is the traps need to be scent free or K-9s will smell the trap and dig them up and the wax is to protect them from rust and make them operate fast and smooth.

Sorry St. Francisville is a little far for me to drive but I do have a good friend who lives in Golden Meadow that may want to, if you don't mind I can ask him.
