when deer trip a set do they get injured? will the traps actually capture a deer or a pig?

I know jack shite about trapping.

It can contain them. However if you catch a 200lb animal in a 1 1/2 duke coil spring they're not gonna stay in it long. Snares on the other hand would hold them. I dont see how you could let that animal go safely though.

also, the traps he's using are hold traps not snap and break traps. the jaws of the traps have rubber cushions on them to not break the leg. so a deer could pull out uninjured.

Did I miss where he said he was using soft catch traps? Not all of those type traps are soft catch. In fact, the vast majority arent. They do work very good though because it allows just enough blood flow to the digits to keep the animal from chewing out of the trap once the appendage goes numb from lack of circulation.

ture not all are soft catch. i think his yote sets are though because he's wanting to sell em to the pen. and in the pic of his yote set it looks like a rubber jaw trap.

Soft catch would make more sense, since he's selling them live to be ran. I have no interest in trying to take those things live.

Nothing on todays check too damn cold! Did have a cat step 2" from my pan and only saw one set of fresh coyote tracks in the snow.

No I am not using soft catch traps, the trap I am using has wide cast iron offset jaws. They were designed for the live market. Rubber jaw traps are a pain in the arse. One coon will wreck the pads on a trap and it takes time to change those pads out in the field.

I have caught and held a nubbin buck in a #2 trap. I used my catch pole to hold him down and release him. A snare around a deers neck is a death sentence they won't survive.

Deer stops on a snare just stop the the snare from completely closing all the way and the deer can slip it's leg out of the loop. It's just a small crimped ferrel or smashed nut on the cable.

To keep a deer's neck out of a snare you can place a sick above the loop of the set snare to make the deer step over it instead of going through it.

Todays check nothing again! If tomorrow is the same I am pulling some of the ones with no activity and resetting in another location. Not sure what's going on I saw no fresh tracks today they may be on a round and will be back through tonight.

I did scout some new ground today and will be putting in 10 or so new sets there.

Well again nothing I am really begining to wonder. I did have some activity where coyotes and bobcats worked sets and just missed the pan by an inch. I had a deer throw one trap and a bobcat stepped inbetween the trap and my lure. I put out 8 more sets so agian I will see what tomorrow brings.
