SCUBA Cert cost

I'm gonna take the plunge (pun intended) and go get my SCUBA cert and was curious to know (before I start calling around) what the going price is for just the basic SCUBA cert (Open Water Cert). I'll work on the other ones as I feel the need. I've researched it a little and it appears that there is classroom/testing setup plus pool time and then 4 open water dives minimum.
The amount I'm curious about is just instruction/open water. Not concerned about gear (that's variable by what I want). I've seen anything from $300-$500 ranges, but I've also seen questionable reviews on those outfits, so it makes me question if I'm getting the right price or getting gouged.
TIA.

I've done a lot of research here in Baton Rouge because I am also wanting to get basic certified.
Basically, if you have all the gear, it's about $750-1000 depending on where you do your check out dives. Vortex springs is cheaper than Florida.

Ok. Yeah I just called the local dive shop here and was quoted $399 including 4 OW dives (likely down in Pelham.
Gear is variable ($300-500 likely) but that's separate cost in my book and I control that depending on how wild I want to go for first gear.

Class room, plus the cost to travel to Florida for your check-out dives will run you around $1,000. You will do one day at Vortex springs (likely) then dive the gulf, weather permitting.
Rent your gear for the check out dives, it's a good way to figure out what type of equipment is best for you. I do recommend buying your own wetsuit, mask, fins, and snorkel however.
I used Underwater Adventures in BR and would recommend them.

vortex is in florida. its NNE from destin. mack jr #1 made his check out dives there 6 weeks ago. its MUCH better run than what it was 10+ years ago. good diving = no. better than sitting on the bench = yes.
be prepared for a lot of full-arm tats and piercings in the swim area.
7-seas is still the go-to shop in BR imo.
