I would go with the scag based off of 10 years experience using them. they are heavy duty, and the rigid frame will prove much more durable in the long run.

for the record, I have a gravely, and have never used scag or ferris. When I was in high school, I spent summers working for superior landscape and the owner only used Gravely and claimed Scags were junk. My current neighbor has a scag, and sure enough, it's always in the shop. I've had the Gravely 8+ years and haven't even had to change a belt or anything. Just change the oil and keep gas in it and sharpen the blades.
I know some Ferris owners and have researched them and they consistently get better reviews than Scag and I've never personally heard a bad thing about them.
I'd go Gravely over both, but out of those two, Ferris.

I have 90 acres and my house is on a cleared 10 acre lot on the same property.I have 2 tractors that I use.One is for working in the wooods and the other basically just cuts grass.I cut this grass weekly with a 35 hp tractor and 6ft finishing mower.I dont think a zero turn would be up to 10 acres every week but I may be wrong.I think you will be much happier with a 35-40 hp tractor than you will a zero turn. For what you will spend on a new scag you can by a nice used tractor with a couple of implements. You will be able to do so much more with a tractor than a lawnmower.Just my .02 based on personal experience.

The ferris diesel is normally around 11,5 and he will sell it as new w/warranty for 8800 since its also end of year. Same thing on the Scag but for 8600 normally 9999.
Given this, I'd go diesel.
Also, whichever model you choose, make sure the dealer is reputable and accessible.

Well i went with the Ferris. Ultimately it was the diesel engine and suspension that won me over and he came down to 8500 plus a stihl fx100 trimmer at cost. I also wont have to worry about ethanol issues.
My favorite feature has to be the suspension. The Scag was nice but I still felt like my teeth were gonna fall out. This Ferris is a beast and I knocked out 3.5 acres in under 2 hrs. The torque and power were very good on some overgrown areas.
As for the tractor issue, I will eventually get one but needed something for around the house and this doubled as a great fast pasture tool. Did I say I was very happy with the comfort of the ride?

Oh and the dealer is 2 miles away which is a huge plus. Saw a lot of Scags in the shop, but id suspect most were commercial landscapers that drive them like they stole em

Nice machine.
The downside is it's hard to have an excuse to not cut the grass now.

Nice mower! So far no problems out of my ferris which has about 180 hours on it. The ride with the suspension is really nice

Nice, which model do you have?
I can't believe how good the suspension is. I was running it hard today and it took handled very well.

You'll only get faster and faster. I can cut my 6.25 acres in about 2 1/2 hours with the Kubota. I would put $ on you being able to best my speed with the ferris.
One word of advice: That diesel is a heavy biatch. If you feel a wheel start to spin (soft or wet ground) STOP. Lift the mower deck and ease out slowly if you can. For the 1st year and a half of mine I was sticking that beast almost every dang week. Get a long tow strap.

Never heard of the second one.
Slag is a solid mower and my first choice.

You went the right direction getting a ztr over tractor. Not sure about the ferris over scag though. I would have got the turf tiger with cat diesel. I mow 6 properties off hoo shoo too that are a minimum 6-7 acres. Most people out there now with ztr over tractors and their yards look much better also. Don't have all the deep ruts and crap tractor and cutters leave when wet. And cut to shorter and neater as well.

One of the best buys going now for cutting several acres is the John Deere 1400 series front deck mowers. Everyone is going to front decks so these mowers do not have good resale. You can buy a good used one for cheap. They have Yanmar Diesel engines or in the case of the 1420 a yanmar block with gas head. I bought a 1420 with 72" deck for $4000 at my local dealer. It had 700 hours and was in excellent shape with a full canopy top. You should check them out.
That being said I would get at least a 10' finish mower if I was cutting 10 acres a week or better yet you need an electric fence and some goats.

That suspension is the tits. Great for long use. Nice contoured cut as well. Great choice!
