I think that a lot of people have a bad taste in their mouth when it comes to trot lines because of the idiots who abandon them, let fish die, or run them in really stupid/unsafe areas.

I don't get why anyone would leave yo-yos. They aren't exactly cheap. Then again so are trot lines when done correctly.

It is puzzling. Saw old ones at the Red River saturday. Always see them left at Saline. Dried up 6" crappie and all.

I don't think it's really puzzling. They're lazy. The only other excuse I'm taking is "I died before I could check it." And even then, why isn't the trot line mentioned in the will?!? Savages.

You don't have to justify yourself actions Red. This exact scenario has played itself out before me as well. I released the gator to.

My problem with abandoned trot lines is that they are exactly that..."abandoned." If you're not going to run a line any more, why not pick it up? People don't like nylong string stuck in their props. I blew a lower unit because of fricken nylon string.

Almost every cypress tree around Verrett has abandoned lines around them. Big time pain in the arse when trying to bounce crankbaits off of the trees.

Neither me and it was the first thing that came to my mind in reading the opening post too. I understand and all and this story turned out okay but not this coonass.

Last week there was a hoop net on the waters' edge in the middle of nowhere. It was stacked like it may have fallen out of a boat when the river was higher.

I circled back and was SO tempted but in the end, knew it wasn't mine and even if it was lost, the rightful owner would probably never end up with it- I passed and left it.

Even crossed my mind it was a setup.

Oh and I keep a .38 in my boat in case some crazy shite like you said happens. I sure hope I never leave to go fishing and have to kill a phucker but I'm not going to die at the hands of an idiot either.

I know there are some people who leave theirs up permanently. I don't agree with this and when I'm sure they're not fishing them I will bait some up with the ones I'm setting.

I make sure to take off any/all fish AND bait left before leaving. I'd guess others do the same (bait them) but don't take off bait left.

Yeah, it's definitely in the gray area but there's one guy at Larto, for example, that hangs 100 in some prime spots and leaves them. Uses WIRE to tie them. You think a person has a right to claim a spot for the whole season? I leave them EXACTLY like I found them and it's using, not taking.

OK, now a questions. Last time we ran lines, we found 1/2 dozen nice noodle lines. Some in the open, some tangled in trees, some mixed up in the rocks. We were there 3 days. Never saw another boat. Were those abandoned?

There is a difference between a submerged line and an yo-yo that clearly isn't in use, no?

We're not talking about lifting something either unknowingly or if it's moving, to see what it is. dunno:

Further, some places I set yo yos have limited places to hang them. I even push poles in the bottom to do so. For someone to assume some type of "right" to one is a problem. Lines can be tied or anchored practically anywhere.

Maybe I'm wrong. I can't stand double-talkers and admitted in my initial post about it that it was in the gray area, for sure, so if I am I'll take it on the chin like a man.

bastid.

When I posted that I figured someone would say to hang my own, next to the other one(s). I do, which is another factor in MY favor big guy. hehe

I'm in the area, on the tree, etc. Just reaching over and dropping a shiner on another one while I'm there. Not like going out of my way PLUS some a-hole leaving theirs IN THE WAY.

Phuck it, next time I'll just cut 'em down, throw them in a bucket and put them on the nearest launch so don't leave them phuckers hanging if you're not fishing them- you don't own the trees.

This almost calls for a spin off thread about trot lines
