Another great time in n sask. Not as many canadas and specks as past yrs but snows and Ross's were plentiful and had 2 epic field duck hunts w 6 man limits (pins and mallards)
Had a newbie hunter who had a hard time catching up to ducks ;) my dog made a great long mark retrieve on a canada in wheat field, was easily 500 yds. Rain cut us short by half a day
Good times some good shots some bad and breakfast beers while cleaning birds were great

You should post some photos. My buddy just got back from Alberta and they absolutely wrecked them. Looking forwards to going next year.

What outfitter did y'all go with? Looking at going next year. I know all Alberta outfitters have been killing them good.

I suck at posting pics on this forum or i would put a few up.
We use a small outfitter out of battleford, no website and hes a friend of a friend, not a big operation but ex farmer and has good fields.
Then we diy it to the east, know a cpl farmers in area and it works well.
Rain this yr created some gumbo mud that was amazing, how they deal w it when the frost comes out in the spring i have no idea

We hunted in battleford the second week of September - Lights out Waterfowl was the outfitter we went with - hunting was incredible to put it mildly. It was a hell of an experience

Been going with them for a few years, headed up in a few weeks. Earlier the season the more specks you get. We probably won’t see any. I saw some this morning in East Carroll parish this morning.
Been knowing them dudes for a good while. Ow. Always good hunt.

What are outfitter rates in the area? We use a local guide w no lodge etc and rates are $400 usd per day for 2 hunts a day

We had lodging, food, guns, shells, etc... It was roughly 1k per person, per/day.

I'm headed to Alberta DIY on Friday. Will be there for a week. The season is getting late. Specks will be gone. Most small ducks will be gone. It should be plenty of snows (which I couldn't care less about) and mallards and Canada geese.

I go about Oct 15th each year in order to shoot mallards with green heads. Any earlier and my experience has been that the ducks are mostly brown.

Correct. We went early September. All the mallards and pintail were brown.

DIYed Alberta several years in a row several years ago and it is unbelievably good, or was, and incredibly easy compared to Saskatchewan even then...from what I am told Sask is getting really hard to DIY.

For some reason no one does it much because the field hunting is so unique and good BUT shooting ducks over water in Alberta and Sask is about as good a duck hunt as anyone could ever ask for. I have gone to Alberta several times with nothing more than a floating spread and a Gheenoe in the bed of the truck...and SLAYED ducks. It is a blast and the diving duck shooting, if you are into Cans and Redheads and Blue Bills....is the best there is ANYWHERE. Puddle ducks thick as fleas as well. Why more people don't do it is beyond me.

I went Sept 29th to Oct 2nd about 15 years ago. The mallards were just getting a few tufts of green on their heads. Then I went back about 7 years ago on Oct 15th and I would say the heads were 90% green. A few of the late hatching juvenile birds were still "dirty". And the green isn't as bright and shiny as it is in December. But there was a big difference between Oct 1st and Oct 15th in my experience.

About 1/3 of the mallards we shot were greenheads, not full.plumage but ok. Pintails nope, could id drakes in air but juveniles and hens were similar in the air.

Regardless of the color, watching hundreds of mallards and pintail tornado down into your decoys is incredible - I took some baddass videos !

We also had an awesome snow goose shoot - the last day we were there, we shot 220 snows, to go along with our 72 ducks - plus we had a pile of specks and canadas.

It was awesome !
