Has anyone ever bought a template from Salt Boatworks or used something similar to make a DIY skiff? I have been looking at buying a Solo Skiff to have for some marsh fishing and a general camp toy, and came across these guys. Looks like the FS-15 could be cool. I have started doing some woodworking projects around the house so it is kind of throwing multiple interests into a single project. Its probably too large of a task to take on at the moment, but could be something cool to circle back too later.

I am sure there are a few guys that have done DIY pirouges or canoes but has anyone ever built their own skiff?

Here is a link to their Instagram page: LINK

I know some folks who have used plans from boat builder central with good luck.

ETA: damnit, I just ordered pirogue plans. This board always has me spending money.

I was thinking of building the SK14. I have a little Johnson 9.5 that would probably make it fly.

I built a 19 foot Glen L wooden Aquacat. I am quite good with wood and wanted the challenge. And a laborious challenge it was.

My advice

The only reason to build a wood boat is for the love of the labor. It's more like art. If you are looking to express yourself artistically than go for it.

If you are thinking you can save money - forget about it. You will come out way cheaper buying a good used fiber glass boat.

I fell for all the epoxy on wood propaganda. You will fight rot if you use it.

Not a fan of stich and glue builds. Things are very easy to get out of line.

OP, if you going to build a boat, do it the right way which is about 5 different ways.

Yeah...looking at what all it takes, plus trying to buy a motor for it is going to be WAY out of my budget. Maybe later on down the road I'll look at getting something.

Crap. I know somebody who built a nice one off of these plans. I don't mind giving somebody 20 bucks too much.

Can you post some pictures of the plans? Is it a stich and glue plan?

It's these. It doesn't look like he puts as much freeboard on it as you do. I'm going to use a mix of your/uncle johns method I reckon
