How difficult is it to do a rod repair without a wrapping station? I have one rod that needs a new eye and another that is broken about 6” from the tip. I bought a repair kit with the epoxy, thread, carbon fiber inserts, etc. figured I’d give it a try.

Any diy tips? Or should I just invest in a hand wrapper? I’m sure it won’t be the last repair I do.

you are handy enough to make a makeshift wrapper. I built all my offshore rods. but if i was just doing a repair i wouldnt spend the money on a wrapper

As previously mentioned, a wrapping station is a pretty easy DIY.

But this hand wrapper from CRB is cheap and great:

CRB Core Hand Wrapper - $35

I just got into rod building over the summer and have used that one on 9 rods so far. No complaints.

As far as your rod with 6" broken off the tip... I'd probably just chuck it. That's going to completely change that rod.

Some recent builds for my brothers:

That’s worth the small investment. Just ordered one. Thanks!

CarRamrod and The Last Coco, that’s some beautiful and impressive work!

Now I’m going the mud hole rabbit hole. This ain’t good.

I was thinking the same. It’s a topwater rod with a really fast tip. So I don’t know if it’ll keep the same action. I’ll probably just give it a shot repairing it just to practice. Nothing to lose.

I'm in so deep right now. It's a hobby that gets expensive in a hurry.

Couple things,

1. Rodbuilding.org is a great resource. Use the search function because I'm sure any questions and issues have already been addressed related to the actual process of building/repairing rods.

2. Voodoo Rods is an awesome local vendor. They're in Lafayette. If you spend $100, they'll give you a 15% off discount code on future orders.

Mudhole is great for their online classes and kits (that's how I got started). I took a 6hr online class for $200 which included a whole kit of both rodbuilding equipment and the components to build a rod. The class was awesome. 2 instructors and only 2 "students". The class was split over 2 weekend mornings. I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks for all of the info. I started checking out the tutorials on mudhole already. I’ll let you know how these repairs go once my equipment comes in.

Well, I did the eye repair last night. First time took a few tries but I think I got the hang of it.

I did the epoxy last night as well. Came out pretty good. I have not attempted the repair on my topwater rod yet.

Bumping Thread for some advice from Last Coco. Want to get into rod building. I am having harder and harder time finding rods with full cork grips, reel seat, and guides that I like. In addition to the core wrapper do I need to buy some additional equipment for rotating the rod when applying the epoxy? I know I'll at least need a ream for the cork in addition to the hand wrapper.

The only "equipment" you need is the hand wrapper and a dryer. Here's a link to the dryer I use. I've had no problems with it: CRB Rod dryer - $45. It has mixed reviews but honestly I think it's user error in most cases.

There are all sorts of supplies you'll need too like 2-part epoxy to attach the handle/reel seat, thread finish for your thread wraps, 91% rubbing alcohol to clean up epoxy and thread finish, tip top glue, masking tape, guide tubing, etc...

And then a myriad of small tools like razor blades, burnishing tools, lighter, sharp small scissors, paint brushes, stirrers, mixing cups, etc...

You can piece-meal the whole thing or buy one of these kits to get you started (even if you don't buy the kit, looking at what comes in it is a good indicator of what you'll need):

Mudhole.com Core Rod Building Start-Up Kit - $120

The class I purchased was $200 and came with everything in this kit plus enough components to build 1 rod and the 6 hours of real-time instruction. I highly recommend going that route. It helped me a ton. You can view their class lists here:

Mudhole.com Rod Building Classes

And here's the link to the beginner online one I took:
Online Beginner Rodbuilding Workshop - $199

Couple more quick notes:

- I quickly moved from hand reamers to those that fit in the chuck of a drill. This Dream Reamer Kit - $75 is a great setup.

- The folks over at Voodoorods.com are awesome. They're based in Lafayette and I've ordered the bulk of my supplies from them. After your first $100, they provide a permanent 15% off code. They ship stupid fast and are super knowledgeable about their products.

- Definitely start an account over at Rodbuilding.org. It's a fairly small community of folks in rodbuilding and everyone is kean to help novices. You have to register with your real name as an fyi.
