Going to St. George Island end of the month. I would like fish from the bank on the Apalachicola side of the bay. Never fished this way before. Can anyone suggest a good rod and reel combo and some basic artificial lures to use.

I would say longer rod if your not worried about trees or breaking rod in door etc 8' or 8'6" u can sling a hook no weight pretty far. All of my wade fishing rods are west coast river style. I can just do more and reach farther with smaller baits

Rod: my favorites
Ugly stick elite spinning 8'6"
Shimano teramar 8'
Ugly stick inshore select 7'6"
Lamiglass x-11 salmon 8'6"
Star rod stellar lite 8'

Reels:
Pflueger president 6940 (old one I have no experience with new ones)
Penn Spinfisher V 4500 (things are tanks and heavy no experience with the vi)
Penn slammer III 4500

Braid:
I put 10-15lb braid on all my shore setups. It's really extends my casting range on top of the longer fast action rod

I put 20-40lb braid on the rods that go in the boat and get into mahi and other fish that I have a chance of getting some tanks.

I use 15, 20, & 30lb floro topshot and keep small spools of all three in bacg at all times. If I get into blue fish and mackerel i swap on a 50lb floro or some wire

Edit:

Gear:
Buy a pair of close toed sandals all plastic/rubber no cloth. U will be able to get more range on your casts and keep your fish off the rocks when landing him.
-Crocs with the go fast strap on back will protect your feet from oysters and other razor blade like debris, and prevent you from loosing your sandle in the mud.
- my go to is small circle hook like size of your thumb nail no weight through the nose of a mullet or any round body fish sling it fast and slowly slowly reel him in like a crank bait only he is alive doing his thing. When he starts panicking and going crazy stop reeling and let him do all the action.
- second go to are gulp white or grey shrimp in jig head (if u are getting hardheads or other crap fish switch to unscented jigs)
-cast net
-ice chest/bucket with aerator. Or wade fishing bucket (flowtroll style)

Anything silver metal or plastic
Silver spoons have at least one
Silver flecked shrimps for jigheads
If water is brown and can't see sprinkle in chartreuse soft plastics.
Paddle tails in any colors, grey/silver, white, chartreuse, red.

Don’t want to break the bank but I’m willing to pay for decent equipment. I’ve only used baitcasters before but I understand that a spinning combo has a greater reach. I’m willing to learn how to throw a spinning reel.

Where are you staying? If you are staying in Plantation go to the government cut and fish.

Get a cast net and catch croakers or finger mullet. There are bunches of flounder in the cut.

Go to PensacolaFishingForum.com and search around. They are more familiar with the area you are looking to fish and the equipment you want to fish with.

You are on the right track with a long pole (7'6" - 8') and spinning reel. How big of a reel and how heavy tackle you are looking to throw probably needs to be figured out.

Yep.

If in the plantation, maybe check out Nick's hole as well.

Also, there is fishing pier that goes fairly far into the bay, it is the old bridge. If you are going to do that, make sure you buy a pier net just in case.

A Penn Fierce or Battle combo will be relatively cheap. I like them because they last with just reasonable care.

Spinfisher will be a little more and probably a little better.

I tend to use finger mullet or live shrimp, fresh dead or frozen shrimp, or fishbites. Sand fleas work well too, though they don't seem to have as many on the beach as they used to. So no recs on lures.

For tackle/fishing reports/advice on the island.

Also, this is a fun place to relax, maybe listen to some live music.

I love SGI, maybe my favorite place to vacation. I surf fish typically. Mostly cast and sit

Have fun.
